Uber taps Rivian to build robotaxis in deal worth up to $1.25B

On Thursday, Rivian revealed its collaboration with Uber to construct a multitude of autonomous taxis, drawing upon its forthcoming R2 SUV model. This agreement holds a potential value of up to $1.25 billion for the electric vehicle manufacturer.

To initiate this alliance, Uber is providing an initial capital injection of $300 million into Rivian. Furthermore, it anticipates acquiring 10,000 completely self-driving R2 robotaxis prior to their scheduled deployment in San Francisco and Miami during 2028.

Uber retains the prerogative to acquire an additional 40,000 autonomous R2 SUVs from Rivian, commencing in 2030. Both corporations declared their intention to introduce these robotaxis into 25 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Europe by late 2031. As stated by the firms, this fleet will be solely accessible via Uber’s platform.

Although this arrangement could prove highly profitable for Rivian, it is fraught with numerous hazards and difficulties.

Rivian has yet to commence production of the R2 SUV, with manufacturing slated to begin by June, according to company statements. Moreover, it has neither tested nor implemented an autonomous driving system specifically engineered for robotaxis. Compounding these challenges, the robotaxi production is scheduled for Rivian’s Georgia facility, which remains under construction.

Such impediments do not seem to have diminished Rivian’s steadfastness, nor the resolve of its founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, for whom automated driving technology represents a foremost corporate objective. During the company’s initial “Autonomy & AI Day” in December, he even suggested that these endeavors empower the nascent company to “explore prospects within the ride-sharing sector.”

Certainly, Scaringe spearheaded the company’s 2021 choice to abandon its former rule-based structure for driver aid, opting instead for an AI-centric methodology employing large language models to instruct the system on world perception and navigation. The design of this automated driving system allows it to assimilate insights from fleet data, thereby growing more self-sufficient.

Dubbed the Rivian Autonomy Platform, this outcome first appeared in 2024, integrated into the automaker’s second-generation R1 vehicles. It serves as the cornerstone of Rivian’s strategy to progressively enhance capabilities, ranging from hands-off operation on specific expressways to a forthcoming point-to-point navigation function, anticipated later this year, which seeks to automate driving controls throughout full journeys.

Ultimately, Rivian aspires to provide a system requiring neither driver interaction nor visual monitoring, through an enhanced hardware package, encompassing the integration of a lidar sensor and a dedicated “autonomy computer” capable of processing 5 billion pixels per second. This improved hardware will be introduced in a variant of the R2 SUV by late 2026.

Despite the potential prowess of these functionalities, they are not yet categorized as completely autonomous driving systems, wherein a human operator bears no expectation or responsibility for intervention.

Nevertheless, the nascent firm is eager to ultimately provide that degree of automated driving. During its autonomy day event, it detailed strategies for what it terms “personal L4,” a reference to the standard established by the Society of Automotive Engineers, indicating a level where an autonomous vehicle can function within a defined zone without any human involvement.

Autonomous locomotion continues to be among Rivian’s primary areas of concentration, Scaringe declared last week during his stage appearance at SXSW 2026. “Our trajectory towards achieving hands-free, eyes-free operation by 2027 represents our most substantial financial outlay,” Scaringe stated.

Moreover, he expresses confidence in the speed of development.

“Should one examine the strides made in autonomous technology over the past half-decade and attempt to employ that as a crude measure or indicator for forecasting the subsequent five years, one would be profoundly mistaken. The velocity of advancement differs considerably when contemplating the next five years versus reflecting on the last five years. In this scenario, historical performance is an unreliable forecaster of future outcomes.”

Rivian does not mark the inaugural electric vehicle startup chosen by Uber for robotaxi construction. The previous year, the prominent ride-sharing corporation announced that Lucid Motors would collaborate with autonomous vehicle technology firm Nuro to produce robotaxis, utilizing Lucid’s Gravity SUV as the foundation. These autonomous taxis are slated for commercial deployment by the close of this year in San Francisco.

Globally, Uber has collaborated with over two dozen companies focused on robotaxis or self-driving vehicles. Its most significant collaboration thus far is with Waymo, whereby the Alphabet-owned firm’s autonomous taxis function via Uber’s application in Austin and Atlanta. Additionally, Uber holds agreements with Motional and Baidu, and represents a substantial investor in the U.K. nascent company Wayve.
