Vivo seldom makes an appearance at MWC, but this year it markedly broke from that norm with the unveiling of its forthcoming premier smartphone, the X300 Ultra. This was presented alongside an enhanced telephoto expansion lens and an expert-grade camera frame. The corporation is not prepared to release the device immediately — nor even disclose a substantial number of its specifications — but has asserted that upon its eventual debut, it will be the inaugural Ultra model to be marketed beyond Chinese borders.
The sole definitive piece of information Vivo chose to verify regarding the X300 Ultra itself is that it will incorporate a 200-megapixel telephoto imaging sensor. However, this specification was also applicable to the X200 Ultra from the previous year; consequently, we anticipate discovering what enhancements Vivo plans to introduce for its successor to last year’s well-regarded phone camera.
The 200-megapixel sensor is evidently designed to be fully utilized by the new Telephoto Extender Gen2 Ultra, an accessory lens designed to attach to the device’s back. Such telephoto attachments have gained favor among producers ever since Vivo’s debut of a similar unit alongside the X200 Ultra, with compatibility also extending to the X300 and X300 Pro, and rival versions subsequently released by both Oppo and Honor. Vivo is now raising the stakes by extending the equivalent focal length from 200mm to 400mm within an optic jointly developed with its enduring imaging collaborator, Zeiss.
The device is visibly more substantial and heavier than the initial generation attachment, but in other respects maintains a comparable appearance. It is accompanied by a re-engineered camera holding cover which seems to have incorporated several extra physical inputs and functionalities. Upon closer inspection, one may also observe that the cover lacks an aperture for the haptic shutter activator previously located on the flank of the X200 Ultra — Does this imply the removal of that extra photographic command from the device?
The telephoto component will be complemented by a brand-new attachment: an expert-level camera frame, developed in partnership with mobile imaging accessory maker, SmallRig. According to a company statement, Vivo indicates the frame will feature a ‘selection of cold shoe connections and rapid-release outlets,’ alongside tactile buttons for capturing images and adjusting magnification, and an exclusive cooling unit for demanding video recording sessions. This indicates Vivo’s preparedness to position the X300 Ultra as more than just a gadget for imaging aficionados, but also as a genuine work instrument for expert still and motion picture creators.
Although prior Vivo Ultra smartphones were solely available in China, the X300 Ultra is slated for introduction ‘across international territories’ at an unspecified point later in the current year. The true extent of this rollout remains uncertain — it is highly probable that it will not encompass the United States, and Vivo’s inconsistent record of launching products in Europe also renders this uncertain.
