Revised February 2026: We’ve incorporated a new segment on maintaining down and some observations regarding Outdoor Vital’s Zero Stitch fabric.
What Does Down Fill Power Reveal?
The greater the fill power, the more significant the loft. Down puffer jackets and sleeping bags insulate you by ensnaring the heat emanating from your physique, preserving it within air-filled cavities between the down. A superior down fill power implies the down possesses increased loft, which translates to a larger number of air chambers, subsequently meaning a greater quantity of warmth is conserved. Assuming all other factors are constant, this indicates that apparel with a higher fill power will offer more warmth than its lower-powered counterpart.
Regrettably, all other factors are rarely uniform. Fill power by itself provides insufficient data to ascertain an item’s thermal capability. There is no immediate correlation between fill power and the degree of warmth a product will afford you, as numerous additional elements warrant consideration, such as the volume of fill material present in the product, its capacity to expand effectively within the baffles or down compartments, the fabric’s efficacy in blocking wind, among other things.
To determine the thermal performance of a down jacket, sleeping bag, or comforter, you need to know a minimum of one additional metric: the fill weight.
Understanding Down Fill Weight

Down fill weight is a straightforward metric. It signifies the quantity of down material in the product, typically quantified in ounces or grams. Combining down fill weight with down fill power offers a method for comparing two articles. For instance, the relative capacity of a puffer jacket for heat retention can be approximated by multiplying the fill power by the fill weight. This implies that a 900 fill power jacket with 2 ounces of fill weight can ensnare approximately an equivalent quantity of warmth as a 600 fill power jacket with 3 ounces of fill weight. Their primary distinction, and the rationale behind their varied pricing, lies in their individual mass and compressed volume.
For jackets, the weight difference is not substantial. Hence, some of our preferred puffer jackets are 600 fill power. However, concerning sleeping bags, the situation diverges. Given the considerably larger quantity of down within a sleeping bag, the disparity in mass between equivalent amounts of fill power becomes more pronounced. Except if financial resources are boundless, it is advisable to focus on the thermal efficiency per unit of mass. What degree of insulation is requisite, and what burden are you prepared to transport?
The sole drawback to down fill weight is that some manufacturers omit this specification. It is appealing to declare your puffer jacket has 900 fill power down, yet, disclosing a mere 2 ounces of fill can diminish its perceived appeal. Organizations with less established credibility frequently refrain from publicizing the fill weight. We provide the fill weight for all tested jackets.
Additional Elements to Consider

Although down fill power and fill weight collectively offer a means for item comparison, additional aspects warrant attention for a comprehensive understanding of total warmth. The third significant element involves baffles, which are integral compartments constructed within the product. Were one merely to stitch a solitary nylon sheet as an exterior and insert down within, gravitational forces and motion would cause it to migrate towards the hemline swiftly. To circumvent this issue, apparel manufacturers incorporate baffles to secure the down. The configuration and form of the baffles significantly influence the ultimate thermal performance of your jacket, sleeping bag, or comforter.
