Deutsche Telekom, the German cellular network operator that also holds the principal ownership of T-Mobile in the US, is integrating an artificial intelligence assistant into its telephone service. This functionality, dubbed Magenta AI Call Assistant, stems from a collaboration with ElevenLabs, an AI-audio firm. Initially, it will only be accessible in Germany, without the need for a dedicated application or a particular mobile device. The voice-activated AI helper will be seamlessly incorporated into phone calls, providing functionalities such as real-time language interpretation to users who choose to enable it.
The debut of the Magenta AI Call Assistant took place at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, presented by Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, and Abdu Mudesir, Deutsche Telekom’s executive board member overseeing product and technology. Operation of the Magenta assistant commences when a participant utters the activation phrase, “Hey Magenta,” during a conversation. Subsequently, the assistant can be prompted to perform tasks such as real-time language interpretation, consulting a user’s calendar for scheduling, or utilizing mapping services to locate nearby venues.
ElevenLabs, an AI enterprise, is renowned for its voice replication capabilities, mimicking both podcast presenters and American presidents. Staniszewski shared details regarding the Magenta service on LinkedIn, emphasizing the initiative to offer this functionality without requiring an application download.
“During a telephone conversation, the assistant is prompted by the activation phrase ‘Hey Magenta’,” a spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom explained in an email reply to WIRED. “It solely attends to the query you pose. Should you wish to inquire about something further into the dialogue, re-activation is necessary.”
While AI-powered language translation services are not new, they have primarily been restricted to particular hardware. Both Apple and Samsung provide a Live Translation capability across numerous products. Google’s Pixel 10 devices include Voice Translate, a feature that employs AI to emulate your vocal tone. The unique selling point of Magenta, according to both firms, lies in its device- and platform-independent nature, aiming to feel like a seamless addition to any phone conversation.
However, this user-friendliness introduces a host of privacy issues, such as integrating AI helpers into unencrypted phone communications, and the potential for extensive user data harvesting.
Avijit Ghosh, a technical AI policy analyst with the AI community hub Hugging Face, voices apprehension regarding the deployment of AI assistants within unencrypted communication systems. Moreover, he expresses doubt about the assistant’s practical utility, given that its activation necessitates explicit user command during an ongoing telephone conversation.
