FORT WORTH, Texas — Following the conclusion of a twenty-year dry spell last season, the Texas women’s basketball squad is poised to enter the Final Four for a consecutive year.
The top-seeded Longhorns extended their serene path to the countrywide semifinals on Monday, achieving a 77-41 triumph against the second-seeded Michigan. Having secured twelve consecutive victories, the Longhorns now aspire to couple a national championship with the SEC tournament crown claimed on March 8.
They will confront their equally top-seeded opponent, UCLA, on Friday in Phoenix.
During the previous season, the Longhorns progressed to the countrywide semifinals for the initial occasion since 2003, marking a significant achievement for coach Vic Schaefer in his fifth year at the helm of the program. They were subsequently defeated by their SEC competitor, South Carolina, at the Final Four.
Texas asserted their supremacy over Michigan throughout the entirety of the Fort Worth Regional 3. Junior Madison Booker spearheaded with 19 points and was designated the region’s preeminent player.
The Wolverines, who concluded their season with a 28-7 record, achieved merely 23% shooting accuracy from the court.
Early in the current season, Texas signaled their renewed contention for the national championship, securing two consecutive emphatic victories against UCLA and South Carolina at the Players Era Championship in November.
Texas achieved a remarkable 18-0 record before then suffering successive defeats to SEC competitors LSU and South Carolina away from home in mid-January.
The Longhorns then suffered a defeat at Vanderbilt on Feb. 12, following which an irate Schaefer criticized his squad.
“We possess no spirit,” Schaefer stated at the time. “We lack resilience. This is probably the least robust squad I’ve coached in ages. This carries over from training sessions… my error. I accept responsibility. This concludes immediately.”
The Longhorns have remained undefeated since then. They secured victory in their three SEC tournament matches with an average margin of 19 points, and their four NCAA tournament contests by an average of 35.5 points.
Texas’ sole national title was achieved in 1986 when the Longhorns recorded a perfect 34-0 season.
