Iran Threatens to Start Attacking Major US Tech Firms on April 1

Iran’s Islamic RevolutionaryGuard Corps issued a warning on Tuesday, indicating its intent to commence assaults on over a dozen U.S.-based enterprises throughout the Middle Eastern region starting Wednesday. This action is in reprisal for the demise of Iranian nationals amidst the current conflict involving the United States and Israel. Among the corporations identified were Apple, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Tesla, and Boeing—firms the IRGC charged with facilitating U.S. armed forces’ targeting maneuvers. The IRGC strongly advised personnel of these American companies to vacate, and for local residents to maintain distance.

The admonition issued on Tuesday, disseminated via the IRGC’s Telegram platform, broadens a series of intimidations from Iran targeting U.S. business facilities. This campaign dates back to February 28, when the U.S. and Israel initiated their inaugural strike on Tehran. On the first of March, Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles assaulted two Amazon Web Services data hubs, also inflicting harm on a third within the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. This marked the initial publicly acknowledged assault against U.S.-owned vast cloud computing infrastructure. Financial institution websites, transaction handlers, and customer-facing utilities regionally suffered outages because backup systems designed to avert disruptions were deactivated.

Previously this month, Tasnim News Agency, linked to the IRGC, disseminated a compilation of twenty-nine localized branches and data facilities managed by prominent corporations such as Amazon, Google, IBM, Nvidia, and Palantir, charging these enterprises with aiding U.S. military and intelligence endeavors.

In its Telegram communication, the IRGC stated that the identified companies “ought to anticipate” hostilities commencing subsequent to 8 p.m. on April 1st, Tehran time.

A majority of the corporations specified by the IRGC in its Tuesday Telegram announcement did not promptly address WIRED’s inquiry for a statement. Google, Microsoft, and JP Morgan chose not to provide a statement.

In the Gulf region, billions of U.S. dollars in technology and infrastructure assets are committed, as American technology behemoths have made substantial investments, anticipating the area will emerge as the subsequent epicenter for AI innovation.

The IRGC classifies these non-military hardware and software suppliers as “justifiable objectives,” holding them accountable for furnishing the technology that facilitated the combined U.S.-Israeli offensives which resulted in the demise of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the onset of the conflict. These menaces underscore the U.S. Department of Defense’s dependence on commercial suppliers operating within the area. Palantir, illustratively, constructs the data framework for Project Maven, a Pentagon artificial intelligence initiative that analyzes drone and satellite visuals to pinpoint aerial attack objectives. Furthermore, this defense firm operates a corporate establishment in Abu Dhabi.

Throughout March, the U.S. military retaliated by targeting IRGC unmanned aerial vehicle networks essential for executing the assaults, and U.S. Central Command recently made public video evidence of aerial bombardments obliterating mobile launching platforms. Nonetheless, the air offensive has decelerated in recent times due to a temporary halt in U.S. strikes on Iran’s energy facilities, aimed at investigating prospective peace discussions with Tehran. Amidst the fluctuating pace of operations, the Pentagon is reportedly evaluating the deployment of as many as 10,000 extra service members to the Middle East, seeking to broaden its strategic alternatives prior to a potential ground incursion.

During the month following Khamenei’s demise, roughly 2,000 Iranian individuals have perished, alongside a minimum of 13 U.S. military personnel. The hostilities have proliferated throughout the area, with Iranian reprisal attacks impacting objectives in Israel, Gulf nations, and Iraq. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage situated between Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman, has been largely impassable for weeks due to Iranian intimidation, causing disruptions to worldwide deliveries of petroleum and various commodities.
