AI assistant startup Town nabs unicorn valuation four months after launch

Town, a two-year-old, San Francisco-based startup developing AI assistants, nabbed a unicorn valuation on Monday, announcing a $108 million Series B funding round co-led by Forerunner Ventures and Menlo Ventures. The company launched publicly just four months ago and said it reached millions of dollars in annual recurring revenue in a matter of weeks. It has raised at least $160 million to date, having previously announced a $55 million Series A round in June.

Town — founded by former Plaid CTO Jean-Denis Greze — is one of many AI assistants flooding the market right now. Town targets businesses, giving each employee an AI assistant called a Townie that helps with tasks by connecting to tools such as emails and calendars, as well as other core work systems. Employees’ Townies can talk to each other and share approved information; they can also now work with customers and others outside the company.

Alongside the funding, Town announced a shared workflow that automatically updates employees’ Townies with new business information rather than requiring each worker to update their own Townie. Andreessen Horowitz, Serena Ventures, and First Round Capital also participated in the round.

We’ve reached out to the company for comment.

Town Reaches Unicorn Status with $108M Series B, Redefining Enterprise AI

San Francisco’s tech landscape has a new unicorn: Town. The two-year-old startup, a rising star in the burgeoning AI assistant market, today announced a significant $108 million Series B funding round. Co-led by prominent venture capital firms Forerunner Ventures and Menlo Ventures, this substantial investment not only validates Town’s innovative approach but also catapults its valuation to over $1 billion—a remarkable feat for a company that only emerged from stealth four months ago.

Explosive Growth in a Competitive Landscape

Town’s journey to unicorn status has been nothing short of meteoric. Since its public launch, the company has reported achieving millions of dollars in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in mere weeks, a testament to the immediate value it delivers to businesses. This latest Series B round brings Town’s total funding to at least $160 million, building on a $55 million Series A round announced in June. The rapid accumulation of capital underscores investor confidence in Town’s technology and its potential to capture a significant share of the enterprise AI market.

At the helm of Town is Jean-Denis Greze, a name familiar to the fintech world as the former CTO of Plaid. Greze’s pedigree brings a deep understanding of building robust, scalable financial infrastructure, a foundation that likely informs Town’s vision for integrated and reliable AI systems within complex business environments.

The “Townie” Advantage: Collaborative AI for the Enterprise

Town is not just another AI assistant in a market that’s increasingly crowded; it’s carving out a distinct niche by focusing squarely on the needs of businesses. Its flagship product, the “Townie,” is an AI assistant designed for every employee within an organization. Unlike standalone AI tools, Townies are engineered for deep integration and collaboration.

Each Townie connects seamlessly with an employee’s existing digital toolkit, including emails, calendars, and other core work systems. This integration allows the Townie to assist with a vast array of tasks, from scheduling and drafting communications to retrieving information and streamlining workflows.

What truly sets Town apart, however, is its emphasis on interconnectedness. Employees’ Townies are designed to communicate with each other, facilitating the secure and approved sharing of information across teams and departments. This “collective intelligence” model aims to break down data silos and foster a more cohesive and efficient work environment. Further extending its utility, Townies can now also interact with customers and external partners, expanding the scope of automated assistance beyond internal operations.

Introducing Shared Workflows: A Leap in Organizational Efficiency

Alongside the funding announcement, Town unveiled a pivotal new feature: “shared workflows.” This innovation directly addresses a common pain point in large organizations: the inconsistent dissemination of critical business information. Rather than requiring each employee to manually update their individual Townie with new policies, product details, or operational changes, the shared workflow automatically propagates this information across all relevant Townies. This ensures that every employee, and by extension, their AI assistant, operates with the most current and accurate data, significantly boosting consistency and reducing errors across the enterprise.

The Series B round saw continued support from major players in the venture capital world, with Andreessen Horowitz, Serena Ventures, and First Round Capital also participating. The involvement of such a diverse and high-profile group of investors highlights the broad appeal and perceived long-term potential of Town’s vision for the future of work.

The Broader Context: Agentic AI and the Future of Work

Town’s rapid ascent is emblematic of a broader trend: the shift towards more “agentic” AI solutions that not only process information but also take action and collaborate autonomously. As businesses grapple with increasing complexity and the demand for greater efficiency, intelligent AI assistants capable of integrating into existing systems and fostering organizational cohesion are becoming indispensable.

The market for AI assistants is indeed “flooding,” but Town’s focus on deep enterprise integration, inter-assistant communication, and workflow automation positions it as a sophisticated player. It’s moving beyond simple chatbot functionality to create a network of intelligent agents that can genuinely transform how businesses operate, from internal collaboration to external customer engagement. The substantial investment from top-tier VCs suggests that Town is perceived as a leader in this critical evolution of enterprise software, promising a future where AI isn’t just a tool, but a collaborative partner in every aspect of work.

Bottom Line

Town’s journey from a two-year-old startup to a unicorn in just four months underscores the intense investor appetite for transformative AI solutions, particularly those that address tangible enterprise needs. With its innovative “Townie” AI assistants and the powerful “shared workflow” capability, Town is not merely entering the AI assistant market; it’s defining a new paradigm for collaborative, intelligent automation within businesses. This significant funding round and rapid market traction position Town as a formidable force poised to reshape the future of enterprise work, driving unprecedented levels of efficiency, consistency, and intelligent collaboration across organizations globally.
