Navantia UK Secures Second Export Contract for Methil Yard, Announces Recruitment and Further Investment

Navantia UK’s Methil shipyard in Fife has secured a second export contract for a new-build vessel, leading to an announcement for the recruitment of 60 additional skilled workers as activity at the facility increases. This development follows an earlier export contract awarded in 2026 and coincides with the recent completion of the Navantia UK Seahorse barge, a vessel designed to support the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ship program.

The latest recruitment campaign by Navantia UK is focused on attracting experienced personnel across several skilled trades. The company is specifically seeking welders, platers, riggers, scaffolders, and painters. These new hires are intended to support an expanding workload at the Methil site, signaling a period of projected growth for the facility and its operations.

In parallel with the new contract and recruitment drive, Navantia UK has committed an additional £12 million in investment towards the Fife facility. This capital injection is earmarked for various improvements, including training infrastructure, the acquisition of new machinery, general site upgrades, and technology enhancements. This latest investment brings the total capital committed to the Methil yard to £26.7 million since Navantia UK acquired the site in January 2025.

Employment figures at the Methil yard reflect this period of expansion. Since the acquisition, the workforce has grown from 180 individuals to a current total of 275. Additionally, 75 apprentices are presently undergoing training at the facility, indicating a strategic focus on long-term skills development and talent cultivation. The anticipated addition of 60 new permanent skilled positions is projected to further enhance the yard’s operational capacity as new vessel construction projects commence and progress.

Steve Chisholm, General Manager at the Methil yard, commented on these recent developments. He stated that “Winning another export contract shows the progress being made at Methil and the confidence customers are placing in the yard.” Chisholm further remarked that with the “Seahorse completed, new work coming in and investment going into the site, we are now recruiting more skilled people to help build the yard’s future workload.” These statements suggest a positive outlook for the yard’s trajectory and its role within Navantia UK’s broader strategy.

The Methil facility possesses a historical background in heavy engineering and offshore fabrication, a legacy that Navantia UK aims to build upon. The current recruitment campaign seeks to integrate experienced tradespeople into the existing workforce, complementing the company’s ongoing apprentice intake and ensuring a blend of seasoned expertise and emerging talent. This approach is designed to maintain high standards of craftsmanship while preparing for future project demands.

To underscore the yard’s historical capabilities and heritage, Navantia UK included statements from long-serving employees. Allan Lister, a plater who commenced employment at the yard in 1985, remarked on the quality of craftsmanship historically present at the facility, stating that “I’ve worked all over Britain, and the guys you worked with here, nine times out of ten, were better than anybody else.” Peter Ednie, who started as a burner in 1982, highlighted the scope of previous work, noting, “I’ve cut steel over 300 millimetres thick.” Welder Willie Gibson, also a veteran since 1982, praised the current training initiatives, observing, “We’ve got some really good apprentices.” These comments collectively suggest a continuity of skill and a commitment to nurturing new talent at the facility.

Katherine Thorn, Head of Talent and Culture at Navantia UK, emphasized the career opportunities available at Methil. She described them as “good skilled jobs, with the opportunity to work on significant programmes, develop long-term careers and contribute to the future of shipbuilding in Fife.” Thorn also indicated the specific demand for “experienced welders and platers who want to join a growing team at a yard with a proud industrial heritage and a stronger pipeline of work,” reinforcing the company’s commitment to skilled employment in the region.

Looking ahead, Navantia UK has identified potential future engagements connected with the floating docks program for HM Naval Base Clyde. The company states that the Methil yard is well-positioned to support this program, following a recent announcement by the Chancellor that this critical infrastructure would be constructed and delivered by UK shipyards. This potential involvement would further diversify the yard’s project portfolio, expanding beyond its current engagement in the Fleet Solid Support program, which it supports through the construction and deployment of the Seahorse barge for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s new replenishment ships.

Navantia UK’s acquisition of the Methil facility in January 2025 marked a strategic move to invest in both its workforce and industrial capabilities. The company’s stated objective has been to cultivate a broader order book, encompassing both domestic and international export projects, thereby establishing a diversified and resilient operational base for the shipyard.

Rhea Wolfson, GMB Scotland secretary, commented on the perceived positive trajectory of the shipyard. She noted that “Under new ownership, this shipyard is going from strength to strength with new investment being reflected in orders and recruitment.” Wolfson further stressed the significance of these developments for the local economy and Scotland’s broader industrial capability, stating, “The importance of these skilled jobs and quality apprenticeships to the communities of Fife and Scotland’s industrial capability cannot be overstated.”

In summary, the second new export order secured for Methil during 2026, coupled with the ongoing recruitment campaign for specialist trades, signifies a considerable expansion of activities at the yard. The workforce has already increased by over 50 percent since Navantia UK assumed control of the site, indicating a rapid pace of growth and substantial investment in the facility’s future capabilities.

Why This Matters

The recent developments at Navantia UK’s Methil shipyard hold significant implications across economic, industrial, and strategic dimensions for both the Fife region and the broader United Kingdom.

Economic Revitalization and Regional Impact:The securing of a second export contract and an additional £12 million investment signals a period of economic revitalization for Methil and the surrounding communities in Fife. Heavy industry, particularly shipbuilding, has historically been a cornerstone of local economies. The creation of 60 new skilled jobs, alongside the existing workforce expansion from 180 to 275 and 75 apprentices, represents a substantial boost to local employment. These are not merely temporary positions but often long-term, high-value roles that contribute to household incomes and local spending, creating a positive multiplier effect throughout the regional economy. The sustained investment in training infrastructure and new machinery suggests a long-term commitment, fostering stability and growth in a sector that has faced significant challenges in past decades. This resurgence can help to counter de-industrialization trends and provide new opportunities for residents.

Strengthening UK Industrial and Shipbuilding Capability:The acquisition of the Methil yard by Navantia UK and its subsequent growth contributes directly to strengthening the United Kingdom’s overall industrial and shipbuilding capabilities. Export contracts are particularly crucial as they demonstrate global competitiveness and help to diversify the workload, reducing sole reliance on domestic defense orders. This diversification assists in building a more resilient industrial base, less susceptible to fluctuations in national procurement cycles. Furthermore, the yard’s existing involvement in the Fleet Solid Support program and its potential role in the HM Naval Base Clyde floating docks program highlight its strategic importance to national defense infrastructure. Maintaining and expanding sovereign capacity in shipbuilding is critical for national security, economic independence, and technological advancement, ensuring the UK retains the capability to build and maintain its naval fleet and essential maritime infrastructure.

Skills Development and Retention:The emphasis on recruiting experienced welders, platers, riggers, scaffolders, and painters, combined with a robust apprenticeship program, addresses a critical need for skills development and retention within the UK’s manufacturing sector. The statements from long-serving employees underscore a legacy of high-quality craftsmanship at the yard. By actively investing in apprenticeships, Navantia UK is not only filling immediate skill gaps but also ensuring a pipeline of future talent, preventing the loss of specialized knowledge and craftsmanship that is vital for complex engineering projects. This focus on skills helps to create sustainable career paths, fosters a culture of industrial excellence in the region, and ensures the long-term viability of the skilled workforce required for advanced manufacturing.

Regional Confidence and Investment:The consistent news of new orders, investment, and job creation generates significant confidence within the local community and among potential investors. It signals that Methil, a town with a strong industrial heritage, is once again becoming a vibrant center for high-value manufacturing and engineering. This positive momentum can attract further investment, encourage the growth of local businesses, and improve the overall socio-economic outlook for Fife. The support from figures like Rhea Wolfson of GMB Scotland also highlights the perceived positive impact on workers and their communities, reinforcing the broader societal benefits of industrial resurgence and a commitment to quality employment.

In essence, the developments at Navantia UK’s Methil yard are indicative of a broader effort to re-establish and grow significant heavy engineering capabilities in the UK. They represent a tangible example of industrial strategy in action, balancing commercial export success with strategic national projects, and crucially, investing in the people and skills required to sustain such an endeavor for the long term, contributing to both regional prosperity and national strategic interests.
