AtkinsRealis has entered into a collaborative pact with Anduril UK, aiming to accelerate the advancement and deployment of autonomous aerial vehicles for British defence initiatives. This alliance specifically emphasizes robust safety protocols, stringent verification measures, and comprehensive regulatory guidance.

Pursuant to this arrangement, AtkinsRealis is set to offer its specialized knowledge, assisting Anduril UK in traversing novel certification routes and instituting rigorous validation criteria for independent operations, encompassing stipulations for digital security. Both entities expressed that this move is designed to support the provision of dependable uncrewed systems, capable of functioning securely and reliably within the operational frameworks of the UK military.

This announcement emerges amidst escalating defence sector interest in self-governance, particularly since the Strategic Defence Review highlighted autonomous capabilities as a pivotal component for modernizing the Armed Forces and maintaining a technological advantage. Both corporations depicted autonomy as a mechanism for mitigating risks to personnel while simultaneously furnishing operational benefits in domains such as reconnaissance. This partnership, designated as exclusive for Anduril UK’s uncrewed flight initiatives within UK defence, amalgamates AtkinsRealis’ extensive background in novel aerospace platform development and uncrewed system validation with Anduril’s expertise in autonomous systems and software-centric defence methodologies.

AtkinsRealis affirmed that its proficiency in regulatory matters will aid Anduril in liaising with both the Military Aviation Authority and the Civil Aviation Authority, and in managing defence development trajectories in a manner that fosters quicker innovation while upholding appropriate levels of scrutiny. The companies further stated that AtkinsRealis is backing Anduril UK’s proposals to establish a manufacturing facility in the UK for an uncrewed platform, leveraging its infrastructure and industrial delivery capabilities. On its corporate website, the firm indicates it employs over 14,000 individuals across the UK, with approximately 2,000 engaged in defence-related assignments. The contemplated site is intended to bolster Anduril’s UK investment, supply the British Armed Forces, and potentially facilitate exports to wider European markets.

David Clark, Vice President for Global Defence at AtkinsRéalis, articulated:

“Self-governing systems have, with good reason, been identified as a top priority for defence transformation. Realizing this objective demands judicious approaches that translate groundbreaking technologies into operationally validated, deployable capabilities. Through this accord with Anduril UK, we can contribute our decades of defence delivery and national programme expertise to help furnish dependable, deployable autonomous systems that reinforce national security.”

Rich Drake, Managing Director of Anduril UK, commented that the collaboration primarily focused on how the UK deploys contemporary systems expeditiously. “This collaboration pertains to how the UK constructs and fields modern defence systems, not merely a singular platform,” he remarked. “By conjoining Anduril’s software-first strategy with AtkinsRéalis’ strengths in validation and regulatory compliance, we will guarantee that our armed forces sustain their lead for the foreseeable future.”
