Green Leftward Leap: Capturing Labour’s Disaffected

It was an unprecedented event for the Greens. However, on the night of the party’s inaugural success in a parliamentary by-election for the Manchester constituency of Gorton and Denton, one element was conspicuously absent from Hannah Spencer’s triumphal address: the environment.

Under the recent stewardship of Zack Polanski, the party has evolved into a left-leaning challenger to Sir Keir Starmer’s administration. Yet, customary efforts concerning ecological preservation have been relegated to secondary importance as the Greens set their sights on Labour’s secure areas.

Spencer’s speech in the early hours of Friday offered a clear indication of how the Greens plan to contest the upcoming general election, with a platform prioritizing the cost of living.

“We are striving to enrich the wealthy; we are being drained of resources,” the 34-year-old plumber declared in a potent winning statement that resonated with the grievances of many of her recently acquired voters.

Spencer’s sole mention of ecological matters occurred as she discussed the difficulties of existence in parts of suburban Manchester. “I saw how much harder life is when your surroundings are dilapidated: the refuse, the illegal dumping, the polluted atmosphere,” she stated.

For Starmer and his chancellor Rachel Reeves, the imperative to demonstrate that moderate, financially cautious economic policies can benefit the laboring populace is becoming ever more pressing.

Joe Twyman, joint founder of Deltapoll, remarked: “Gravitating towards the Greens is not about particular concerns but about wanting a feasible progressive option, and the characteristic of lacking governmental authority is that they can pledge anything they wish without the obligation to fulfill it.”

The outcome in Gorton and Denton demonstrates how the self-proclaimed “eco-populist” Polanski has reshaped the Green political party and strengthened its election chances. The party had not surpassed a 10 percent share of ballots in any by-election throughout its existence.

It has also caused apprehension within Starmer’s Labour Party, with party tacticians having cautioned recently that a Green triumph would be the most undesirable result conceivable. Some Labour MPs and trade union leaders have already urged the party to shift its stance towards the left to stem the tide of discontented electors defecting to the Green Party.

Polanski, who is Jewish and gay, took a circuitous route to become party leader. He joined the Liberal Democrats at the nadir of their public favor in 2016, then transferred his loyalty to the Greens a year later and became a member of the London Assembly, Greater London’s representative council, in 2021.

After pursuing theatrical arts at Aberystwyth University in Wales, he relocated to the United States and then to London to engage in local theatrical productions. He also worked as a hypnotist and encountered trouble after telling a concealed journalist he could augment her bust size.

He was chosen as the fresh leader of the Green Party in September last year, pledging to direct a progressive brand of popular appeal to attract Labour supporters.

Under Polanski, the party has unveiled fiscal strategies including a 1 per cent asset levy on people whose holdings surpass £10mn, increasing to 2 per cent on assets over £1bn. He has stated his party would offer a foundational stipend to agricultural families and would cease the Bank of England’s practice of remunerating commercial banks for their reserves — an idea also supported by Reform UK.

His more contentious proposals include the decriminalization and control of all narcotics, and he has attracted censure for asserting that Britain should eject American military personnel from UK defense installations and withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to disentangle itself from the sway of President Donald Trump.

On migration, Polanski has retracted a former Green Party stance on “open borders”, but advocated instead for substituting the Home Office with a more compassionate “Department of Migration”. He has contended that if the UK broadened secure and lawful avenues for refugees seeking sanctuary to come to Britain, the incidence of irregular sea crossings would virtually cease.

The current inquiry concerns the degree to which the Greens can leverage their triumph in Gorton and Denton to make further inroads at municipal polls in May.

In London, where the party has significant influence, it has expanded its aspirations to aim for additional districts — not just Newham, Lewisham and Hackney, but also Islington, Lambeth and Haringey.

The Greens secured four positions at the last general election but placed second in 40 electoral districts, 39 of which supported the Labour Party. However, the party was the runner-up selection for 50 per cent of Labour voters in 2024, according to the British Election Study, implying their political aspirations might broaden.

Jane Green, professor at Oxford University, commented: “It’s not a doctrinal shift of the Green vote nationally, it’s the segment behaving uniquely, the progressive faction converging around the most feasible contender. It’s transitioned from enlightened progressives and youth to a wider alliance . . . the left bloc is united in opposition to Reform and has aligned themselves with the Green Party.”

The aggregate left-leaning ballot, encompassing Labour, the Greens and the Liberal Democrats, represented 68 per cent of votes in Gorton and Denton this time, a decrease from 78 per cent at the 2024 general election. Yet, almost 75 percent of ballots submitted were for options other than Labour and the Tories, an increase from 40 per cent at the last election, an indicator of the increasing splintering of the political environment.

Rob Ford, professor of politics at Manchester University, stated that Labour had overlooked “the vaguely progressive, Guardian-reading demographic and is now suffering the consequences”.

“It’s quite straightforward now to envision a situation where a chain reaction unfolds: the Greens secure numerous districts, fissures deepen in the Labour Party and Polanski contends in a multitude of those legislative constituencies at the next general election as leading contenders.”
