This Sunday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, reigning titleholders India and West Indies will engage in what is essentially a decisive contest, with a coveted spot in the T20 World Cup semi-finals up for grabs.

With South Africa having already secured their berth in the last four from the Super 8 group, these two formidable cricketing nations – both of whom easily navigated the initial group phase – are left to contend for the final remaining position.

Co-hosts India sustained their championship aspirations with a dominant 72-run triumph over Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday. All-rounder Hardik Pandya notably scored a half-century and earned the accolade of player of the match.

Conversely, the West Indies’ victorious streak in the tournament was halted by South Africa, suffering a nine-wicket loss.

Prior to Sunday’s encounter, India’s batsman Tilak Varma stated: “Our aim is to exhibit the audacious style of cricket we’ve played against Zimbabwe and consistently demonstrated since last year.”

“We intend to maintain that same resolve in the upcoming game. And as we progress through the tournament, we will carry forward that same level of intensity.”

India have prevailed in nearly two-thirds of the 30 T20 international contests for men between these teams, with West Indies securing wins in 10.

Interestingly, West Indies have won three of the four T20 World Cup encounters, while India have managed only a single victory – dating back to 2014.

The weather outlook appears favorable. However, should the game be called off or canceled due to adverse weather or other unanticipated events, both teams would conclude with equal points.

Should such a scenario occur, advancement to the semi-finals would be determined by Net Run Rate (NRR) – a situation that would significantly benefit West Indies, who currently possess a superior NRR of +1.791, in stark contrast to India’s -0.100.

India v West Indies: Squad Updates

India might be without batsman Rinku Singh following his departure due to the passing of his father in the midst of the competition.

The middle-order batsman had returned to the India squad before their triumph against Zimbabwe, yet he was not included in the starting lineup in Chennai.

Shivam Dube is expected to retain his spot in the left-handed player’s absence, but Kuldeep Yadav could be introduced to provide an additional spinning choice.

For West Indies, Brandon King represents the primary worry after he suffered an injury during the clash against South Africa.

The opening batsman was hurt while attempting to dive for a catch and was unable to participate further in the match.

Shamar Joseph is a potential replacement for Gudakesh Motie if West Indies opt for a more pace-oriented bowling strategy.

India v West Indies: Anticipated Lineups

India: Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy

West Indies: Brandon King, Shai Hope(wk/c), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph
