Caitlin Clark is **thrilled** to **commence her inaugural appearance** with the U.S. national team **in the coming week**, when the Americans **participate** in the FIBA World Cup **preliminary round** in Puerto Rico.
This will mark Clark’s **initial competitive outing** in **roughly eight months**, as a **series of physical setbacks disrupted** her WNBA season with the Indiana Fever in July.
“It will likely **take me a moment to shake off some of the inertia**. I’ll probably feel a bit **apprehensive**, which is unusual for me, as I **typically don’t experience nerves**, but that probably stems from **my time away from playing basketball**,” Clark remarked on Saturday. “I’m confident that after the first minute of **engaging in play** on the court, I’ll be **perfectly alright**. But more than anything, I’m just genuinely **eager**. I recognize the significant **effort and dedication** I’ve invested to ensure my body is as **robust** as it can be for my return.”
Clark has endured quite a **challenging recovery journey**, having **participated** in only 13 games last season. She experienced **muscular strains in her groin** followed by a **bone contusion** in her left ankle. Over the recent months, she has been actively **training** in the gym, **collaborating** with the Fever medical team and their player **skill enhancement personnel**.
“I’ve always been an individual who will simply **depend on my diligence**. I feel it has certainly **spurred greater effort** from me,” Clark commented regarding her injuries. “However, that’s also likely the aspect that was somewhat **disappointing** about it; I felt I had **invested so much commitment and vitality** prior to the previous season, and then, **evidently**, I only **took part** in approximately 13 games.”
Clark holds **cherished recollections** of **competing alongside** younger USA Basketball teams. She **remembered** being in Colorado Springs, Colorado, during her **adolescent years** and entering a room **adorned** with jerseys of **legendary figures from American sports history**.
“My eyes were so **astonished**, I thought it was the **most incredible sight**,” she expressed. “[To witness] the senior national jerseys of **esteemed** men’s players and women’s players. It’s a 15- or 16-year-old’s **aspiration** to achieve that **someday**.”
Clark acknowledges that this represents merely her **initial foray** with the national team. There was considerable **public outcry** when she was not selected for the 2024 Paris Olympic team. She **aims to compete with** the World Cup team **in the upcoming autumn** and subsequently join the 2028 Olympic **roster** in Los Angeles.
“There’s a **significant journey to reach that stage**,” she stated. “**Undoubtedly**, that is my ultimate **objective**, preceded by the World Cup. There is **much for me to absorb and master**.”
