Randy Arozarena has conveyed his apology to Cal Raleigh concerning the expletive-filled remarks he aimed at his Seattle Mariners club colleague earlier in the current month during the World Baseball Classic.
On Saturday, Arozarena issued a declaration via the Mariners, affirming that he and Raleigh are “like family and colleagues.”
“Recognizing that Season Commencement is just days away, I wish to avoid this becoming an unwanted focus,” Arozarena conveyed. “Cal and I have conversed, and I expressed regret for my words spoken post-game. Nothing from the WBC diminishes the truth that we remain kin and club members.”
Almost a fortnight prior, Arozarena garnered attention at the WBC due to his response to what he perceived as a slight from Raleigh. The Mariners’ club members found themselves on opposing teams in a March 9 contest when Team Mexico, featuring Arozarena, encountered Team USA, with Raleigh.
Arozarena erupted in a vulgar tirade addressed to Mexican journalist Luis Gilbert after Raleigh opted not to offer a handshake prior to his plate appearance.
The subsequent day, Raleigh sought to minimize the incident, stating he had conversed with Arozarena and that “no animosity” existed between the fellow players. The All-Star catcher reaffirmed his position on Saturday, disclosing to journalists that all events occurring at the WBC are “consigned to history.”
“We resolved the issue through dialogue, and everything proceeded splendidly,” Raleigh stated, as reported by MLB.com. “Randy is aware of my affection for him; he is like a brother. The matter is behind us, and none of us are prolonging this issue. We are in a harmonious state. We ironed things out. Each of us expressed contrition, and we both achieved reconciliation, and we are both pleased to return here, too.
“It was truly pleasant entering the clubhouse and greeting everyone. As enjoyable as [the WBC] was, it felt good to be back. There’s a sense that the family has all reunited, in a way.”
Mariners’ skipper Dan Wilson highlighted the “unique collection” of athletes within the Seattle team locker room, expressing no astonishment that Arozarena eventually offered regret. The duo has been colleagues since Arozarena’s transfer from Tampa Bay to Seattle throughout the 2024 campaign.
“It comes as no shock to me,” Wilson stated, as per MLB.com. “That’s precisely what we’ve discussed within that team locker room. It’s simply an extraordinary ensemble. They have mutual affection, and yes, the moment is opportune. I believe we are all eager to return to Seattle and commence this endeavor.”
The current American League West titleholder Mariners commence their campaign Thursday on their home turf, pitted against the Cleveland Guardians.
