Over 400 students and educators from various parts of Bristol and the South West engaged in engineering and technology sessions this week, as part of Babcock’s countrywide Festival of Engineering.
Staged in Bristol to align with World Engineering Day on 4 March, this two-day gathering constitutes a component of a broader collection of events also occurring in Rosyth and Plymouth, all intended to motivate young individuals to explore vocations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Attendees engaged with a variety of practical tasks and exhibitions, such as robotics, virtual reality welding, coding drills, and a boat buoyancy challenge. Dedicated activity zones enabled students to investigate engineering principles via applied activities, and a flight simulation experience was likewise offered.
Assisted by Babcock apprentices and graduates, the gathering was arranged jointly with local industrial collaborators and educational institutions. Its purpose was to underscore the diversity of professional paths accessible within the engineering and technology domains.
Neil Young, Babcock’s Global Engineering Capability Director, stated that this endeavor is formulated to tackle an increasing deficit of engineers.

The gathering also showcased distinguished presenters, such as Jo Passingham, Chief Executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and Ella Lovibond, a Bristol Bears women’s rugby player who possesses a top-tier qualification in engineering.
Passingham asserted that presenting engineering to youth at an early stage in their schooling is crucial for developing the upcoming talent pool.
“It’s an honor to be collaborating with Babcock to increase understanding of the significance of engineering at the foundational stage,”she commented.“Engineers are innovators, and some of the world’s most momentous and symbolic accomplishments owe their existence to them.”
Babcock explained that the Festival of Engineering forms a component of its broader “foundations to future” strategy. This initiative centers on involving learners from primary school up to university level, aiming to assist in tackling enduring talent deficiencies.
It is anticipated that job opportunities within industries comprising defence, digital technology, clean energy, and construction are projected to expand considerably in the forthcoming period. Already, engineering roles represent approximately 25% of job adverts across the UK.
