Dauntless stands as the second among the Royal Navy’s six Daring-category guided missile destroyers, conceived chiefly to offer regional aerial protection for carrier strike groups. With a displacement ranging from 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes and extending beyond 152 meters in length, this vessel category is structured around the Sea Viper air defense system. This system integrates the SAMPSON multi-role radar and the S1850M extended-range monitoring radar, alongside Aster 15 and Aster 30 projectiles contained within 48 Sylver vertical launch silos.
These vessels utilize power from a unified electric drive system, primarily fueled by Rolls-Royce WR-21 gas turbines and auxiliary diesel generators. This enables them to achieve velocities exceeding 30 knots and possess an operational radius of over 7,000 nautical miles while cruising. Approximately 190 crew members manage the warship, with quarters available for supplementary onboard personnel.
In addition to its main aerial defense function, Dauntless is equipped with a 4.5-inch Mark 8 maritime artillery piece, 30mm auto-cannons, Phalanx short-range defense systems, and robust machine guns. Its anti-vessel capacity is scheduled to shift to the Naval Strike Missile subsequent to the phasing out of Harpoon. This vessel category is concurrently receiving incremental enhancements, such as the Sea Viper Evolution initiative, which is designed to augment ballistic missile protection abilities, as well as the eventual integration of Sea Ceptor to substitute Aster 15.
A substantial flight deck and covered hangar facilitate the deployment of either a Wildcat helicopter outfitted with Martlet or Sea Venom projectiles, or a Merlin helicopter configured for anti-submersible combat utilizing torpedoes. Having been launched from Govan in 2007 and formally inducted into service in 2010, HMS Dauntless was dispatched with the UK Carrier Strike Group as part of Operation HIGHMAST across the Indo-Pacific region.
