On the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, President Donald Trump joined government and military leaders, past and present, to pay tribute to the victims, survivors, and heroes of the attack on the Pentagon. The ceremony marked a quarter-century since American Airlines Flight 77, a hijacked plane, crashed into the building, claiming the lives of 184 individuals.

As dawn broke and rain fell, a colossal American flag was unfurled down the side of the Pentagon. This act replicated the defiant gesture of first responders on September 12, 2001, and has been a tradition on every anniversary since, symbolizing resilience in the face of tragedy.

Hours later, a gathering of dignitaries, including President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, addressed attendees. Each speaker reiterated the national pledge to “never forget” the 2,977 American lives lost that day across New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attacks involved four coordinated hijackings of U.S. airliners: two struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City, one impacted the Pentagon, and the fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew valiantly fought back against the hijackers.

In his remarks, President Trump highlighted the personal stories of those killed at the Pentagon. “A Navy airman had just gotten off the phone with his 10-year-old son,” President Trump recounted. “A secretary was celebrating her 46th birthday. … A sergeant major was chatting with some colleagues he had hosted for a dinner party over the weekend. At 9:37 a.m., every single one of those people and every person at that sergeant major’s party was murdered by terrorists who flew Flight 77 straight into this legendary building.”

Condoleezza Rice, who served as President George W. Bush’s National Security Advisor during the 2001 attacks, shared her vivid memory of the day. She described “the horror and the shock that I felt” upon seeing images of smoke billowing from the Pentagon on a television screen within the White House bunker. Despite the immense devastation, Rice emphasized the exemplary courage displayed by military personnel and civilians alike. “It is fitting that here at the Pentagon, we reflect not just on what happened here, but what in that moment of crisis, people did here,” she stated. “They summoned a will and a spirit, a sense of obligation that our military lives by every day—I will stand between danger and my fellow citizens, I will leave no comrade behind, I will go, I will serve, I will do my duty.”

Gen. Dan Caine, who as a young major on 9/11, scrambled an F-16 fighter jet to protect Washington D.C., characterized the anniversary as a narrative not only of profound loss but also of “great American courage, selfless service, and those who’ve made the choice to carry those memories forward.” His personal experience underscored the immediate and courageous response of military personnel.

The response to the Pentagon attack mobilized more than 40 federal, state, and local agencies. Ms. Rice specifically recalled then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who, despite his security detail’s pleas for him to evacuate, actively assisted in pulling people to safety. President Trump also recounted how, on September 12, Army Maj. Gen. James Jackson ordered the American flag to be hung from the damaged side of the Pentagon as a powerful symbol of defiance.

President Trump elaborated on the flag’s symbolism: “First responders climbed to top the walls and hung it next to the gaping holes in this building as a symbol of American defiance.” He noted that the original flag from 2001 was present at the ceremony, alongside three firefighters who helped raise it: Joseph Morabito, Scott Morgan, and Carl Solberg, further connecting the past to the present commemoration.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who himself joined the U.S. Army in the aftermath of 9/11, observed that the attacks “inspired millions to step forward instead and say, ‘send me.’” He acknowledged that a significant portion of current service members were not alive or old enough to remember the events of 9/11. This generational gap, he stated, places the responsibility on those who do remember “to pass down that memory to our kids, to my kids, to yours, to my grandkids, to yours,” ensuring the sacrifices and lessons of that day are not forgotten.

In a notable deviation from the primary focus on remembrance, both President Trump and Secretary Hegseth referenced ongoing geopolitical tensions, specifically linking the response to 9/11 to current hostilities with Iran, which they described as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror.” This connection underscored a perspective on the enduring nature of global threats following the attacks.

Despite these specific geopolitical remarks, the overarching theme conveyed by the leaders centered on the profound human cost of the attacks, the extraordinary bravery demonstrated by survivors and first responders, and the profound sense of national unity that emerged in the aftermath.

President Trump concluded his address by reflecting on the dual legacy of September 11th: “September 11th reminded us of the terrible power of hate. The 25 years since have shown us the even greater power of the American spirit to endure and prevail and to win.”

Why This Matters

The 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11th attacks at the Pentagon holds significant importance for several reasons. Firstly, it serves as a critical act of collective remembrance, ensuring that the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the bravery of first responders, and the resilience of a nation are honored and not forgotten by successive generations. For many current military personnel and younger citizens, 9/11 is a historical event, making these ceremonies vital for educating them about its profound impact.

Secondly, the attacks fundamentally reshaped U.S. domestic and foreign policy. The establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, enhanced aviation security measures, and the initiation of the Global War on Terror are direct consequences. These policy shifts continue to influence national security strategies, civil liberties debates, and international relations. The ongoing conflicts and strategic alliances, as alluded to by some speakers, often draw a direct lineage from the post-9/11 geopolitical landscape.

Finally, these commemorations reinforce a shared sense of national identity and purpose. The overwhelming unity witnessed in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 remains a powerful symbol of the American spirit. By revisiting these moments of tragedy and heroism, the nation collectively reaffirms its commitment to defending its values, supporting its service members, and standing resilient in the face of adversity. The ceremony, therefore, is not merely a look back, but a recalibration of national resolve and a solemn promise to uphold the memory of those who perished.
