The Defence Ministry reports efforts are underway to assess the incorporation of the Mk41 vertical launch system aboard Royal Navy Type 31 frigates, refusing to disclose specifics regarding how this functionality will be implemented throughout the class as acquisition talks persist.

Responding in writing to parliamentary inquiries from Liberal Democrat MP James MacCleary, Defence Minister Luke Pollard stated the administration plans to equip the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates with the U.S.-developed Mk41 launch system, yet declined to offer specific information concerning the projected schedule. MacCleary queried the number of vessels within the five-ship category that would have the apparatus fitted during their build phase and prior to deployment, and conversely, how many would acquire it during the subsequent Capability Insertion Period. Related: Ford Pro AI: The Chatbot …

Pollard responded, “We intend to fit the Type 31 frigate with the Mark 41 vertical launch system,” the minister declared. “Working closely with the US Navy, we are progressing the next steps of the Mk41 procurement, including assessment of all installation and integration options.”

He elaborated that additional data could not be divulged as deliberations and acquisition efforts remained active.

“At this stage, as I hope the hon. Gentleman will understand, it would be inappropriate to provide any further information whilst this commercially sensitive work is ongoing,” Pollard remarked.

The Mk41 vertical missile launcher finds extensive deployment among NATO maritime forces and is capable of launching diverse missile categories, such as Tomahawk land-assault missiles, Standard aerial defence missiles, and anti-submersible armaments, contingent upon its setup.

The Type 31 frigates, identified as the Inspiration class, are under construction by Babcock in Rosyth, Scotland. A quintet of vessels is designated for the Royal Navy: HMS Venturer, Active, Formidable, Bulldog and Campbeltown. Even though the blueprint incorporates room for the Mk41 system, the ships are anticipated to acquire supplementary functionalities subsequently via scheduled enhancements and capability integration phases.
