Arsenal successfully navigated a significant examination of their Premier League championship aspirations as Jurriën Timber and William Saliba each netted from set-pieces, securing a 2-1 victory against a Chelsea side reduced to ten men at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.
Following their resounding defeat of Tottenham the previous week, Arsenal secured another crucial win, re-establishing their five-point lead over Manchester City, who possess a game in reserve.
Saliba put the home side ahead midway through the initial period by converting Bukayo Saka’s corner kick; however, Arsenal’s Piero Hincapié inadvertently scored an own goal during first-half injury time.
Chelsea’s leveling goal, also originating from a corner, unsettled the Gunners, yet they regained the lead after 66 minutes when Timber powerfully headed in Declan Rice’s curving delivery.
Pedro Neto was cautioned for protesting Timber’s goal, subsequently receiving a second booking mere moments later following his forceful tackle on Gabriel Martinelli.
This marked Chelsea’s seventh dismissal in the league campaign and their second in successive games.
Many might have anticipated Arsenal comfortably seeing out the match, however, David Raya made a superb diving stop from Alejandro Garnacho’s bending shot, and Liam Delap’s attempt was disallowed due to offside – both occurrences happening in second-half injury time – as the Gunners took a monumental step towards clinching their inaugural title in 22 years.
With only nine fixtures remaining, Arsenal are scheduled to face just one opponent currently ranked within the top six: next month’s highly anticipated away match against Pep Guardiola’s City.

Subsequent to City’s victory at Leeds, Arsenal faced considerable pressure to perform, and their initial goal seemed almost fated.
Saka’s curling corner delivery was met by a colossal jump from Gabriel, who soared above João Pedro and Reece James to head the ball across the box, and Saliba’s subsequent header deflected off Mamadou Sarr’s shoulder, eluding a struggling Robert Sánchez.
However, Arsenal would soon experience a taste of their own tactics.
Raya executed a superb one-handed stop, preventing Rice from scoring an own goal when James’ corner ricocheted off his elbow. Rice was arguably lucky to avoid conceding a penalty, but ultimately it proved irrelevant, as Hincapie inadvertently netted by flicking on James’ subsequent corner.
Arsenal had mostly controlled the opening 45 minutes, but abruptly, Mikel Arteta faced a significantly altered team talk.
Raya was compelled into action six minutes post-interval when he parried Enzo Fernandez’s low shot for a corner. He was subsequently needed once more to gather Pedro’s header aimed at goal.
Chelsea’s self-assurance was escalating, and with it, the apprehension within the Emirates.
Arsenal appeared nervous, and when Saliba permitted Cole Palmer to snatch the ball from him, Arteta seemingly motioned to his own fanbase to maintain composure.
And merely a few moments subsequently, the Arsenal faithful were rejoicing as Timber connected with Rice’s corner.
Sixteen of Arsenal’s 52 league goals to date this season have originated from corner kicks, equaling a record for a solitary Premier League season, a distinction they hold jointly with Oldham and West Brom.
Chelsea asserted a push on Sanchez and were incensed that the goal was allowed, Neto earning a booking from Darren England through his protests.
A subsequent caution occurred in the 70th minute when Neto thwarted Martinelli’s break with an aggressive tackle.
The match had transformed instantaneously, and Sanchez parried Eberechi Eze’s low shot with ten minutes remaining.
Conversely, Moises Caicedo’s long-range effort sailed just high, and Raya deflected Garnacho’s shot for a corner.
Chelsea believed they had netted during injury time when Delap successfully put the ball in the net, yet Pedro was deemed offside in the play preceding it.
