In his inaugural match after taking over from Roberto De Zerbi at the Ligue 1 outfit, new Marseille manager Habib Beye experienced a 2-0 loss to Brest.
The home squad promptly established their dominance. Following an audacious long-range shot by Kamory Doumbia that challenged Geronimo Rulli, Brest netted the opener in the 10th minute. Ludovic Ajorque leapt amidst the backline to nod the ball into the top left corner, providing his side with an initial edge.
For the majority of the encounter, Marseille found it difficult to counter, with Mason Greenwood blasting a shot high from afar and witnessing a subsequent attempt thwarted.
Ajorque served as the linchpin of Brest’s menace. He came near once more during a counter-attack prior to extending their advantage to two goals in the 29th minute.
Hugo Magnetti’s cross from a dead-ball situation located the unmarked striker, whose nod into the bottom corner resulted in a 2-0 scoreline.
Prior to halftime, Marseille pressed onward, with Greenwood eliciting a superb stop from Coudert and Nayef Aguerd failing to convert from a corner kick.
The second half unfolded in an analogous manner. Marseille dominated ball control but were devoid of any decisive edge.
Amine Gouiri nodded just off target, Benjamin Pavard couldn’t capitalize from point-blank range, and Coudert repelled Quinten Timber’s attempt from afar.
In the 82nd minute, Marseille were granted a spot-kick after Daouda Guindo committed a foul on Greenwood. Greenwood took the kick personally, but Coudert made the right call, plunging down to his left to maintain the two-goal advantage.
Subsequently, disappointment intensified for the away side, who ultimately accepted their loss on an evening that Beye will undoubtedly be wishing to promptly erase from memory.
