STELLENBOSCH, South Africa — Casey Jarvis sank three birdies within his initial five holes, culminating in a 3-under 67 and a victory in the South African Open on Sunday, thereby securing an entry into the Masters and the Open Championship later this year.
Jarvis claimed victory for the second consecutive week on the DP World Tour, building on his triumph the previous week in the Kenya Open.
“I just sensed a subtle premonition as the week commenced that something extraordinary was about to unfold,” Jarvis remarked following his three-stroke triumph at Stellenbosch Golf Club.
The moment proved propitious. On this inaugural occasion, the Masters extended an invitation to the victor of the South African Open. The nation’s third-oldest golf championship additionally allotted three places to the prominent contenders who had not previously secured eligibility for the Open Championship in July at Royal Birkdale.
Francesco Laporta of Italy concluded with a 69 and shared second place with Frederic LaCroix of France (65) and Hennie Du Plessis of South Africa (69).
Du Plessis trailed by two strokes approaching the 18th hole, but he concluded with a bogey, a lapse that deprived him of a place in the Open Championship. Those berths were awarded to Laporta and LaCroix due to their superior global ranking.
Jarvis had participated in merely one major tournament, securing an entry into the 2024 U.S. Open via a 36-hole qualification event in England. He failed to make the cut at Pinehurst No. 2. He now ascends into the global top 100 for the inaugural time and is potentially eligible for an invitation to the PGA Championship in May.
“It has been my childhood aspiration to compete at Augusta,” Jarvis stated. “The thought crossed my mind this morning — it’s challenging not to contemplate it. I eagerly anticipate going there to assess how my performance measures up against the globe’s premier golfers.”
Commencing the ultimate round holding a one-stroke advantage, Jarvis sank a 40-foot birdie attempt on the opening hole, placed his approach shot within 2 feet for a birdie on No. 4, and secured a third birdie on the par-5 fifth. He concluded with six consecutive pars for a 14-under 266.
Jarvis becomes the second South African to achieve consecutive victories on the DP World Tour this season, mirroring Jayden Schaper’s triumphs in back-to-back weeks at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Mauritius Open in late December.
Previous Masters victor Patrick Reed, currently heading the Race to Dubai standings, posted a 68 during the ultimate round and finished in a tie for 29th position.
