Roberto De Zerbi has expressed regret for his prior statements concerning Mason Greenwood, firmly asserting he would never endeavor to diminish matters related to violence against women.
The recently appointed Tottenham head coach spoke about the contentious issue subsequent to his designation, which occurred after Igor Tudor’s removal as the club languished near the foot of the Premier League standings.
De Zerbi’s earlier comments concerning Greenwood, uttered during his tenure at Marseille, had attracted condemnation from various fan associations, including Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach, prior to his arrival.
During his initial discussion with the club, De Zerbi declared: “I prefer to respond to your query in Italian as I wish to be explicit.
“I have never intended to trivialise the matter of violence against women, nor violence against anyone more generally.
“Throughout my life, I have consistently advocated for the susceptible and the delicate; I have unwaveringly championed and positioned myself in support of those most imperiled.
“Those who are intimately familiar with me will understand that I am not the type of individual who strikes deals to secure additional victories or another championship.
“I am apologetic if I caused offense to anyone’s sensibilities regarding this topic – as a father to a daughter, I am very perceptive regarding such matters, and always have been.
“I hope that as time progresses, people will become more acquainted with me and will comprehend that at that moment, I didn’t intend to adopt a position.”
De Zerbi’s Statements on the Greenwood Dispute
Greenwood encountered grave accusations in 2022, which were subsequently dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service due to inadequate proof. He has since recommenced his professional journey in France.
De Zerbi had earlier characterized the striker as a “decent fellow” who had suffered a “significant penalty,” remarks that incited strong criticism when his name surfaced as Tottenham’s favored coaching prospect.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust also expressed apprehension subsequent to his designation, although it is believed the club delved into the matter comprehensively with De Zerbi during their talks before ratifying him as head coach.
