Despite securing its initial national championship, Indiana’s head coach Curt Cignetti has not altered his program’s rigorous approach, a reality newly acquired transfer Nick Marsh encountered on Thursday as the squad commenced spring practice.
Queried regarding Marsh – a primary pass-catcher for Michigan State over the past two seasons and a prominent acquisition for Indiana in January, after Cignetti steered the team to an unblemished 16-0 tally last fall – the coach initially highlighted Marsh’s performance at MSU before shifting his focus to the junior’s chosen footwear.
“I disapproved of those gold shoes he appeared in today,” Cignetti informed journalists. He further elaborated, “He experienced what a severe dressing-down feels like. I’m unsure if that occurred to him with much frequency at Michigan State. That particular incident transpired prior to the commencement of practice.”
Hailing from Detroit, Marsh amassed 100 catches for 1,311 yards and nine scores while at Michigan State. He was included with TCU quarterback Josh Hoover and other players in Indiana’s contingent of incoming transfers, a group ESPN rated third across the nation.
Cignetti observed that the coaching personnel face “more tasks ahead with this squad than with the initial two teams,” attributing this to the fact that the staff has not been acquainted with many of the vital players for an extended period.
Under Cignetti’s guidance, Indiana boasts a 27-2 record over two campaigns.
Regarding Marsh’s inspection of footwear before training, Cignetti stated, “That served as a sharp reminder.” He added, “Nonetheless, he has exerted considerable effort and performed admirably for us.”
