Thursday brought the revelation that the Pittsburgh Pirates are elevating Konnor Griffin, widely regarded as baseball’s premier prospect, to their main roster. This move precedes Friday’s inaugural home contest against the Baltimore Orioles.
Should he maintain his place on the squad for the entire season, the Pirates stand to gain a draft selection, thanks to the Prospect Promotion Incentive program.
Set to celebrate his twentieth birthday on April 24, Griffin was the ninth overall selection in the 2024 draft. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound shortstop demonstrated his prowess last year in the minor leagues, achieving a .333 batting average coupled with a .941 OPS. This year’s preseason camp also saw him deliver remarkable performances, including smashing four home runs over 16 exhibition contests.
Griffin commenced the current campaign with Triple-A Indianapolis, where his initial 16 plate appearances yielded seven base hits, alongside three successful steals.
Wednesday saw sources disclose to ESPN’s Buster Olney that the Pirates are actively involved in advanced discussions with Griffin concerning an extended contract.
