SAN ANTONIO — Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown was expelled during the second quarter of Tuesday’s 125-116 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs, subsequent to being assessed consecutive technical fouls by the referees.
During Boston’s offensive drive prior to the technical fouls, Brown seemed to falter out of bounds while being defended by Spurs point guard Stephon Castle, leading to a change of possession. Brown vehemently disputed the call with official Tyler Ford as he moved toward the opposite side of the court, claiming Castle had shoved him beyond the boundary lines.
Ford, the head referee for Tuesday’s game, stated that “in live play, we did not perceive any unlawful contact” regarding the lack of a foul call that prompted Brown’s heated response.
Ford eventually assessed Brown with a technical foul. However, the Celtics guard persisted in his disagreement with Ford, and official Suyash Mehta swiftly issued Brown a further technical foul as teammate Sam Hauser intervened to calm Brown. This second technical foul led to Brown’s expulsion from the game.
Ford stated Brown was given the initial technical foul “for his aggressive gesturing, use of vulgar language, and clear displeasure with the uncalled foul.” Ford added that the subsequent technical foul was imposed since Brown “aggressively advanced towards a game official, all while pointing and employing foul language.”
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, meanwhile, showed his backing for Brown in a subtle, though amusing, manner.
When questioned regarding Brown’s expulsion, Mazzulla remarked: “I just extend immense praise to my high school principal. He possessed the courage to remove a student. He did not delegate it to the hall supervisor.”
When inquired about what vexed him regarding the events leading to the dismissal, Mazzulla responded, “He was an exceptional principal.”
The Celtics held a 51-49 advantage when Brown was dismissed. Brown persisted in debating with the officials as teammates, Celtics security, coach Joe Mazzulla, and assistant Sam Cassell endeavored to guide the guard from the playing surface.
In 13 minutes of play, Brown recorded eight points on 4-of-8 shooting alongside two rebounds, seven assists, and one steal as the teams proceeded to the locker room at halftime tied at 58.
Swiftly thereafter, the five-time NBA All-Star chose to share his sentiments regarding the dismissal on social media, remarking on X, “this the s— I be talking about.” Brown has been vocal in his disapproval of the officials this season, and he was penalized $35,000 by the NBA in January for his remarks concerning the referees made after the game.
Prior to Tuesday’s defeat, Brown was recording a team-leading average of 28.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists across 57 appearances.
“I fully comprehend Jaylen’s perspective,” Mazzulla stated. “Absolutely. And I support him unequivocally. I believe he was entirely justified to feel exasperated and act as he did.”
