South Africa progressed to the Super Eights at the T20 World Cup following a facile six-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates this morning.
The Proteas had already secured their spot in the subsequent phase, yet there was no letting up as Aiden Markram’s squad upheld their unblemished streak with a dominant performance in Delhi that proved overwhelming for their Associate rivals.
South Africa altered their lineup significantly, and one of the fresh faces, Anrich Nortje, made a notable impact, claiming two for 28 from his four overs as the UAE were limited to 122 for six.
Corbin Bosch, however, was the standout bowler, securing three for 12 as the UAE found it difficult to gain momentum once the initial stand of 38 off 27 balls – between Aryansh Sharma and captain Muhammad Waseem – collapsed.
Alishan Sharafu posted a resilient 45 but lacked substantial backing.
South Africa’s chase was measured rather than flamboyant, yet there was never any risk of them falling short.
Markram, Quinton De Kock, Ryan Rickelton, and Dewald Brevis all made scores in the tens as they comfortably reached their target with 6.4 overs to spare.
Markram Displeased with South Africa’s Fielding Performance
Markram stated: “It was excellent to witness the lads seizing the moment wholeheartedly. The bowling unit was highly effective in implementing strategies. Today, with some precipitation and unusual atmospheric conditions, it was a bit sticky, likely with reduced rebound, so it was beneficial to compete in these circumstances.”
Markram was somewhat dissatisfied with his team’s performance in the field, though, adding: “We underperformed in fielding, utterly substandard in our mindset and methodology. A key takeaway for us. Luckily, we have a little window before the initial Super Eight match, which is beneficial for the squad.”
