Michigan held the premier top seed in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection committee’s preliminary bracket, unveiled on Saturday, with Duke and Arizona following in a group the committee’s head designated as a universally agreed-upon top trio.
The Wolverines are positioned first in six out of the seven evaluative criteria on the official NCAA team records, also dominating the nation in total victories across Quadrant 1 and 2 matchups. All three leading squads possess ten Quadrant 1 triumphs, and the Wildcats maintained their position among the top three, even after suffering two defeats last week.
Committee head Keith Gill mentioned there was considerably more discussion concerning the final top seed, as UConn’s defeat by Creighton on Wednesday evening demoted the Huskies from the 1-line. Ultimately, Iowa State claimed UConn’s position, with Gill stating that Iowa State, UConn, and Houston were all strong contenders for the top seeding.
Iowa State’s victory against Houston on Monday “was a key influencing element,” Gill remarked.
UConn did not fall significantly, securing the premier 2-seed, narrowly surpassing Houston.
“UConn’s trio of strongest victories surpasses Houston’s top three wins,” Gill observed. “[The committee] assigned slightly more importance to those triumphs.”
The top six teams are expected to undergo substantial alteration within the upcoming day, as Houston welcomes Arizona (3 p.m., ABC) and Michigan confronts Duke in Washington D.C. (6:30 p.m., ESPN) on Saturday.
Illinois and Purdue completed the list of 2-seeds.
The four 3-seeds were current titleholder Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, and Gonzaga, while Texas Tech, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, and Virginia comprised the 4-seeds.
Gill explained that Texas Tech was initially placed on the 3-seed line when they entered the top sixteen on Wednesday, but after All-American forward JT Toppin was found to have a torn anterior cruciate ligament and consequently sidelined for the remainder of the season, the committee was prompted to reassess.
“When we conducted our detailed examination on Thursday morning, they consequently fell to the 4-line,” Gill conveyed.
Alabama and Arkansas, who contested a memorable double-overtime match on Wednesday night, were the last pair of teams excluded from the leading sixteen. Gill said the committee deliberated over the Crimson Tide’s deployment of Charles Bediako, but also highlighted their record of 3-2 with Bediako and 16-5 in his absence, so it did not carry the same weight as certain other circumstances concerning player presence.
“We did not implement a significant alteration to that,” he stated.
Although three weeks yet persist until Selection Sunday, the preliminary bracket disclosure has frequently proven to be an accurate predictor, particularly among the leading contenders. Across seven of the eight years this bracket was unveiled, a minimum of three top seeds maintained their status on Selection Sunday, and 2023 showcased identical top seeds in both the initial bracket and the final official bracket.
Nevertheless, the group of teams is clearly not finalized.
“There are 800 regular-season games from this point until the commencement of the conference championships,” Gill said. “Exceeding 800. There is a considerable amount of basketball still to unfold.”
This is the sole preliminary bracket disclosure for the season. The final team selection day is March 15.
