Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko was lauded by temporary manager Michael Carrick after he entered as a substitute to net a goal for the third occasion in four games during the 1-0 win against Everton.
Sesko capitalized on Bryan Mbeumo’s delivery, coolly converting his sixth strike in his last seven outings – a stark contrast to the mere two goals he achieved in his initial 17 matches for the club this season.
Despite this, Sesko has yet to succeed in breaking into the starting line-up. While Carrick acknowledged there might be some disappointment for the £66m close-season acquisition, the 22-year-old was not voicing discontent.
“I understand the reason everyone is discussing this and exaggerating its significance, but I maintain an excellent rapport with Ben,” Carrick stated.
“I have no issue with Ben, and he has no grievance either. He naturally desires to feature, yet I cannot commend sufficiently his demeanor, the effort he’s investing, and his disposition to substitute in and perform as he has once more.
“We’ve engaged in several constructive discussions, and he is currently in a very positive state. A significant aspect of our role is assisting him in his progression and fostering his growth as an athlete.
“Occasionally these are small advancements, other times they are more significant strides, and he has recently made some monumental leaps. That is truly gratifying to witness.”
Carrick also offered accolades for Senne Lammens, who secured United’s inaugural league shutout on the road since the previous March.
“In my view, a goalkeeper must be dependable and trustworthy,” he remarked. “Rather than generating disorder, one desires them to eliminate the chaos and restore tranquility. I believe Senne accomplishes this.”
Everton attempted to exert pressure on Lammens by positioning several footballers in his vicinity during a succession of corners in the second half, but without success.
Everton manager David Moyes acknowledged that their strategy had miscarried.
The Scottish manager commented: “The goalkeeper was exceptionally superb. The stop he executed from Michael Keane, and the manner in which he handled the corners.”
“We anticipated that, with the intensity we applied in those circumstances, we might have made contact with one of them. I believed we would succeed, but we failed. In my opinion, he was the standout performer on the field.”
