Iran participating 'not appropriate', says Trump

Iran seem probable to be substituted in the global football spectacle.

United States president Donald Trump has counseled Iran against participating in the 2026 World Cup, slated for North America, against the backdrop of the persistent strife in the Middle East.

Iran secured a spot in its fourth successive World Cup, effortlessly progressing through AFC qualification and suffering only a single defeat in their third-round group.

Nevertheless, given that Iran is being subjected to aerial attacks by the United States and Israel, as part of a conflict that has extended to several Gulf states, it seems utterly improbable that its national team will be taking part in the World Cup.

Latest data indicates that over 1,255 individuals have perished in the conflict, with an additional 12,000 injured.

The vast preponderance of these casualties are from Iran, and they encompass the nation’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who succumbed after an aerial assault on Tehran on February 28.

On Wednesday, Iranian official Ahmad Donyamali stated he is unable to foresee a scenario where Iran would now participate in the international spectacle.

“Given that this unprincipled government [the US] has murdered our leader, in no event can we take part in the World Cup,” he conveyed to ‌state television.

“Our children are in peril, and essentially, such prerequisites for involvement are non-existent.”

“Given the malevolent deeds they have perpetrated upon Iran, they have instigated two conflicts against us over eight or nine months and have slaughtered and lionized multitudes of our populace. Therefore, we unquestionably cannot maintain such an attendance.”

Iran has been placed in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, and is slated to compete in two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

However, even after FIFA president Gianni Infantino clarified that Iran would still be received at the competition, Trump delivered a caution that the team would be more prudent to abstain.

“The Iran National Soccer Team is invited to The World Cup, yet I genuinely deem it unsuitable for them to attend, for the sake of their own well-being and security,” Trump penned in a message on his Truth Social platform.

Infantino verified in a previous message on Instagram that he had conferred with Trump regarding the matter.

“During the talks, President Trump reaffirmed that the Iranian team is, naturally, invited to participate in the tournament within the United States,” Infantino penned.

“We all require an occasion like the FIFA World Cup to unite individuals now more than ever, and I genuinely express gratitude to the President of the United States for his endorsement, as it demonstrates anew that football connects the globe.”

Should Iran pull out of the competition, then their spot will probably be filled by the subsequent top-ranked squad from the AFC confederation that did not advance.

Iraq is poised to confront either Bolivia or Suriname in a cross-confederation playoff on March 31.

Should Iraq suffer defeat, then they would be next in succession for Iran’s place. If Iraq triumph in the play-off, then the United Arab Emirates would be the probable contenders to claim the position.
