Kovács had seemingly considered the ball’s position – airborne and slightly behind the attacker at the point of contact – as mitigating factors, believing Simeone was not in full control and thus the “obvious goal-scoring opportunity” threshold for a red card hadn’t been met. Verdict:In my opinion, this was unequivocally the correct outcome and a textbook example of positive VAR intervention. While the initial yellow card was understandable given the speed of the incident and the subtle question of ball control as it was airborne, the VAR’s thorough review highlighted the “obvious” nature of the goal-scoring opportunity that was denied. The criteria for DOGSO were met: Simeone was moving towards the goal, in close proximity to the penalty area, had a clear path to goal with minimal defensive cover, and would have likely gained control. The decision, though painful for Barcelona, upheld the integrity of the game’s laws, albeit at a pivotal juncture.
