On Thursday, Flipboard unveiled social websites, presenting an innovative method for creators and publishers to establish their unique online presences.
These digital hubs are constructed upon dialogues already occurring across the open social web, encompassing decentralized platforms such as Mastodon and Bluesky, alongside diverse public web material.
According to Flipboard, social websites amalgamate social posts, videos, podcasts, newsletters, and various discussions into a unified locale that creators oversee. Furthermore, it allows for the consolidation of profiles and content from Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, YouTube, podcasts, blogs, and RSS feeds into one singular point.
Flipboard perceives social websites as a fresh paradigm for social media, granting communities greater proprietorship and the ability to govern how content and dialogues are structured. Having championed decentralized social media in recent years, the company now aims to simplify access to the open social web for publishers and creators.
“Social websites assist podcasters, creators, and publications in establishing collectives around their endeavors and managing the user journey, including the algorithm,” stated Flipboard CEO Mike McCue in a blog post. “Rather than initiating a fresh collective, creators can utilize social websites to effortlessly unite the individuals and discussions that already exist concerning their podcasts, videos, and newsletters throughout the social web.”
The inauguration of social websites signifies the initial online expansion of Surf, Flipboard’s reader application which enables individuals to navigate and discover the open social web. The company observes that these social websites are fueled by Surf feeds.
Flipboard has already collaborated with publishers and creators who have established their own digital platforms. Publishers, notably The Verge, Wired, Rolling Stone, 404 Media, and The Oregonian, have fashioned social websites where subscribers can monitor journalists, podcasts, videos, and dialogues within a centralized nexus. Creator David Rushing fashioned All Net, a social website tailored for NBA enthusiasts that amalgamates basketball discussions, league updates, videos, and real-time match analysis.

To generate a Surf feed, individuals are required to visit surf.social, register, and select the “+ Create Feed” option located in the sidebar. Subsequently, they must adhere to the instructions to incorporate sources, designate a collective hashtag, and configure filters to personalize their feed.
After the feed is configured, the proprietor can allocate a bespoke domain through the feed header’s ellipsis menu to fashion a digital platform that they can disseminate to others. Flipboard asserts that social websites are intended to exist independently of Surf, being capable of distribution throughout the internet.
“By integrating material and dialogues from diverse social platforms, Surf social websites evolve into hubs to stay informed about anything that captures your interest,” Flipboard elucidates. “This merely marks the initial phase. Further personalization instruments are forthcoming, encompassing bespoke headers, color schemes, and supplementary feed administration functionalities.”
