A prominent always-on game is ceasing operations shortly after its release; on this occasion, it’s the no-cost team-based shooting game Highguard.
Wildlight Entertainment, the developer, states that, although Highguard attracted 2 million users, the title will be permanently deactivated on March 12th. This occurs under two months following its January 26th premiere. The studio elaborated, “Despite our team’s dedication and diligent efforts, we have not succeeded in cultivating a viable player count to maintain the game over an extended period.”
Prior to the title’s permanent cessation, a final patch is slated for release either this evening or the following day, introducing a fresh character and a new armament, alongside various other modifications.
All of this unfolds as publishers and creators persist in pursuing the exceedingly high user numbers and consistent income flows generated by major always-on successes such as Fortnite. Yet, gaining entry into this domain remains remarkably challenging, with recent triumphs like Arc Raiders being exceptionally uncommon. Even development teams primarily focused on solo experiences, such as Remedy, the creators of Alan Wake, have attempted to venture into ongoing service titles, yielding less than optimal outcomes.
