Family location-sharing and safety app Life360 is expanding its pet-tracking capabilities on Tuesday with the launch of a new product line of $7.99 scannable pet tags and other pet care features that tap into its tracking network technology.

Life360 expanded into pet tech last year with the launch ofGPS pet trackers that leveragethelost-item-finding capabilities that the company integrated into its platform afterits 2021 acquisition of AirTag rival Tile. With Tile, the company now offers not just location-sharing features for families, but also the ability for members to track other things of importance — like keys, handbags, luggage, and pets.

Since then, families on the service have added more than 8 million pets to their accounts, the company says.

However, the team found that not everyone wants to attach a bulky tracker to their pet’s collar, and not everyone needs access to location-tracking features or other advanced options like geofences and escape alerts.

In many cases, pet owners just want to put their contact information on a pet’s tag, which is what the new scannable pet tags support.

But there’s a twist. Instead of just providing a pet owner’s phone number when someone scans the QR code printed on the new pet tags, the scan also alerts the family through the Life360 app installed on the family’s smartphones. (The person who found the pet does not need to have the app for this to work.)

This helps in multiple ways — not only does it provide peace of mind to families searching for a lost pet, but it also provides the pet’s location details. That can be useful if the lost pet escapes from the finder’s control and runs off again, as the family will at least have the last known location recorded.

Families can update their contact details through the Life360 pet profile in the app.

In addition, the company is rolling out several new pet care features for families, including tools that let families schedule “care logs” to manage and track whether the pet has been fed, walked, given medication, or had its litter cleaned. Everyone in the family can see these care routines, so they will know if the pet needs their attention.

Another fun feature is “Zoomies Alerts” for GPS trackers, which track the bursts of energy a pet has at particular points during the day or evening. A new Weekly Roundup will recap other routines, like the distance walked or information about who in the family provided the pet with the most care during the week.

With the new features, the company is also making its pet trackers more affordable. Before, the Pet GPS trackers were only available with the higher-tier Platinum and Gold subscriptions, but now they’re included with the $99-per-year Silver bundles, too.

The new pet tags and GPS trackers are sold on both the comapny’s website and Amazon in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K.

Key Takeaways:

  • Life360 is rolling out affordable $7.99 scannable pet tags that alert owners via the app and provide the pet’s last known location upon scanning, bridging the gap for pet owners who don’t need full GPS trackers.
  • The company introduces new integrated pet care management features like “Care Logs” for tracking feeding, walks, and medication, alongside “Zoomies Alerts” and “Weekly Roundups” to enhance pet wellness and family coordination.
  • Life360 is making its GPS pet trackers more accessible by including them in the more affordable $99/year Silver subscription, significantly broadening their market reach across multiple countries.

Life360 Unleashes New Smart Pet Tags and Enhanced Care Features, Making Pet Tracking More Accessible

Life360, widely recognized for its family location-sharing and safety application, is taking a significant stride forward in the pet technology sector. Building on its successful integration of Tile’s tracking capabilities, the company today announced a fresh suite of pet care innovations. This launch includes an innovative line of $7.99 scannable pet tags and a host of new app-based features designed to offer greater peace of mind and streamlined pet management for families. This move underscores Life360’s commitment to extending its ‘circle of safety’ to every cherished family member, including the furry ones, by offering flexible and user-friendly solutions.

The Evolution of Pet Tracking: Bridging the Gap

Life360’s journey into pet tech began last year, leveraging its pivotal 2021 acquisition of Tile, a prominent AirTag competitor. This integration brought sophisticated lost-item-finding technology to the Life360 platform, enabling users to track not just family members, but also crucial personal items like keys, handbags, luggage, and, crucially, pets. The response has been overwhelming, with over 8 million pets already registered on family accounts within the service.

However, Life360 recognized a critical nuance in the pet owner community: not every pet, or pet owner, requires or desires a bulky GPS tracker attached to their collar. While GPS trackers offer invaluable real-time location and advanced features like geofencing and escape alerts, many pet parents simply seek a reliable way for their contact information to be accessible should their beloved companion wander off. This insight directly led to the development of the new, discreet, and highly functional scannable pet tags, addressing a widespread need for basic yet smart identification.

Decoding the Smart Tag: Beyond Traditional ID

The new $7.99 pet tags represent a clever evolution of the traditional pet ID. Instead of merely displaying a phone number, each tag features a unique QR code. When scanned by a Good Samaritan who finds a lost pet, this QR code triggers an immediate alert directly to the family’s smartphones via the Life360 app. Crucially, the person who finds the pet does not need to have the Life360 app installed, ensuring maximum accessibility and ease of use for anyone who might encounter a lost animal.

This innovative approach offers several layers of assurance. Firstly, it provides instantaneous peace of mind for anxious families, letting them know their pet has been found. Secondly, and perhaps most ingeniously, the scan also relays the pet’s precise location details to the owners. This feature proves invaluable even if the pet, in a moment of panic or excitement, manages to escape from the finder’s grasp again. The family will at least have a record of the last known location, significantly narrowing their search area and increasing the chances of a successful reunion. Owners can easily update their contact details and pet profile information directly within the Life360 app, ensuring the information is always current.

Enhancing Pet Care: A Suite of Integrated Features

Beyond just tracking, Life360 is enriching the pet ownership experience with several new in-app pet care features designed to foster better coordination and care within families. These tools aim to simplify the daily routines and responsibilities associated with pet ownership, making it a more collaborative effort.

  • Care Logs:This feature allows families to schedule and track essential pet routines. Whether it’s ensuring the pet has been fed, taken for a walk, given medication, or had its litter cleaned, everyone in the family circle can see these logs. This eliminates confusion and ensures that no care task is overlooked, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and reducing redundant efforts.
  • Zoomies Alerts:A more playful yet insightful feature for GPS tracker users, “Zoomies Alerts” monitor and notify owners of their pet’s bursts of energy throughout the day or evening. This can be a fun way to understand a pet’s activity patterns and even flag potential changes in behavior or health.
  • Weekly Roundup:This comprehensive summary provides an overview of the pet’s activity, including distance walked and, notably, who in the family contributed most to the pet’s care during the week. It’s a great way to celebrate shared pet parenting and encourage active participation from all family members.

Accessibility and Market Reach

In a move to make pet tracking even more accessible, Life360 is also revising its subscription tiers. Previously, the advanced Pet GPS trackers were exclusive to the higher-cost Platinum and Gold subscriptions. Now, Life360 has made these trackers available with its more affordable $99-per-year Silver bundles. This strategic pricing adjustment significantly lowers the barrier to entry for many pet owners, allowing a wider demographic to benefit from advanced GPS tracking without committing to the highest-tier plans.

Both the new scannable pet tags and the GPS trackers are now available for purchase directly from Life360’s website and through Amazon. This widespread availability spans across key markets including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K., demonstrating Life360’s global ambition to secure and simplify the lives of families and their pets.

Bottom Line

Life360’s latest expansion into pet tech, with its ingenious scannable tags and integrated care features, signifies a maturing approach to digital family safety. By offering a spectrum of solutions, from simple, affordable ID tags with smart alerts to comprehensive GPS tracking and care coordination tools, Life360 is demonstrating a nuanced understanding of diverse pet owner needs. This strategy not only enhances the safety and well-being of pets but also strengthens the fabric of family units by simplifying shared responsibilities. As the pet care market continues to embrace technology, Life360 is positioning itself as an indispensable platform, ensuring that every member of the family, regardless of species, remains connected, cared for, and secure.
