The Netherlands’ ASML is possibly the biggest name in lithography, using its machines to etch patterns onto silicon wafers inside a computer chip factory known as a fab. Fellow Dutch company Morphotonics is smaller and works in a different corner of the same field: nanoimprint lithography, or NIL, a process used to manufacture the displays in AR glasses and other optics. It said it has benefited from ASML’s supply chain and uses many of the same vendors.

Dutch Optics Innovator Morphotonics Secures €40M to Scale AR and AI Infrastructure Technologies

Key Takeaways

  • Strategic Funding Round:Morphotonics has successfully raised €40 million in an extended funding round, backed by a consortium of investors including 3M Ventures and Invest-NL, to significantly scale its nanoimprint lithography (NIL) production.
  • Dual Market Expansion:The capital infusion will fuel the expansion of Morphotonics’ manufacturing capacity for smart glasses and other AR optics, while also enabling a strategic push into the burgeoning market of co-packaged optical components for data centers.
  • Leveraging Advanced Manufacturing:Benefiting from a robust supply chain shared with industry giants like ASML, Morphotonics is poised to ramp up production of critical components like waveguides, with its next-generation machine capable of over 6 million units annually.

While the global tech industry often looks to the titans of chip manufacturing like ASML for foundational lithography advancements, a quieter revolution is brewing in a specialized corner of the same field. Dutch-based Morphotonics, a pioneer in nanoimprint lithography (NIL), has emerged from stealthier development with a significant €40 million funding boost. This investment is set to propel the company’s advanced optical manufacturing capabilities, targeting the rapidly expanding markets of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses and next-generation data center infrastructure.

The €40 Million Catalyst for Growth

Morphotonics’ recent €40 million extended funding round underscores growing investor confidence in its proprietary NIL technology. The impressive syndicate of backers includes strategic corporate venture arms like 3M Ventures, alongside institutional investors such as Innovation Industries, BOM, and Invest-NL. Further participation from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, Dutch family office Ernij Next, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) highlights a broad belief in the company’s potential. This substantial capital injection is earmarked for a crucial phase of expansion: scaling up production to meet surging demand and making a strategic foray into new, high-growth markets. It’s a testament to 12 years of meticulous research and development, now ready for prime time.

Unpacking Nanoimprint Lithography: Precision at Scale

At its core, Morphotonics specializes in nanoimprint lithography (NIL), a manufacturing process distinct from the deep ultraviolet (DUV) or extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography employed by ASML for transistor-level chip fabrication. Instead of etching microscopic circuits onto silicon wafers, NIL involves creating a “stamp” – a master template with nanoscale patterns – which is then physically pressed into a photosensitive material, often a polymer, and solidified, typically with UV light. This method is exceptionally well-suited for high-volume, cost-effective manufacturing of optical components with intricate geometries, such as those found in AR displays, privacy screens, and other advanced optics. It offers a unique combination of high resolution, throughput, and affordability, making it ideal for applications where complex optical structures are paramount.

Powering the Augmented Reality Revolution

One of the most immediate and impactful applications of Morphotonics’ NIL technology lies in the burgeoning smart glasses market. The company’s process is crucial for creating waveguides – thin, transparent pieces of glass or plastic that precisely deflect light to project images directly into a wearer’s field of vision. These waveguides are integral to the functionality of cutting-edge devices like the Meta Ray-Ban Display, Even Reality, and Magic Leap. The demand for such components is skyrocketing: China alone reported a doubling of smart glasses sales in the first eight months of this year, while IDC forecasts global shipments of smart glasses with displays to reach 12.2 million units by 2030. As this market matures, manufacturers are desperately seeking scalable, high-precision solutions like Morphotonics’ machines to produce these critical display components efficiently.

To meet this escalating demand, Morphotonics is significantly boosting its manufacturing capabilities. According to CEO Hugo Da Silva, the company’s next-generation machine, set to ship early next year, will boast an impressive annual production capacity of over 6 million waveguides. This leap in capacity is vital for partners aiming to bring AR experiences to the masses.

Strategic Expansion into Data Centers: Optical Computing’s Future

Beyond AR, Morphotonics is making a strategic pivot into another high-growth sector: optical components for data centers. Specifically, the company is targeting co-packaged optics, an emerging technology where Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) – chips that use light instead of electricity – are integrated directly with conventional electronic processing units. This innovation promises to dramatically increase data transfer speeds and reduce energy consumption within data centers, which are increasingly burdened by the demands of AI and high-performance computing. While Morphotonics has yet to ship machines in this area, its technology has already been validated by key customers, signaling strong potential for its NIL process to facilitate the precise manufacturing of these next-gen optical interconnects, a crucial step toward more sustainable and powerful AI infrastructure.

Scaling Operations and Global Reach

Under the leadership of CEO Hugo Da Silva, who joined in September 2024, Morphotonics has undergone rapid expansion. The company has more than doubled its headcount from approximately 30 to 60 employees, with plans to stabilize around 70 to 75. This growth reflects the transition from a research-intensive phase to a production-focused entity. Morphotonics’ business model revolves around supplying advanced equipment to display manufacturers, integrating its technology into their existing production lines, and providing the necessary processes and chemicals. “Typically, display manufacturers would acquire our equipment as part of the supply chain, and we integrate it into the entire manufacturing process. We teach them the process, we provide the chemicals, and they can manufacture that,” Da Silva explains.

With roughly 90% of its current revenue stemming from hardware sales and 10 to 15 systems already deployed globally, the company projects an ambitious expansion to 50 deployments within the next two to three years. This growth in hardware sales is expected to concurrently boost its recurring revenue from services and licensing. A strong international footprint is critical to this strategy, with manufacturing and support teams strategically located in key technology hubs across Asia, including China, Taiwan, and South Korea, as well as the U.S. “Strong local presence is very important,” Da Silva emphasizes, highlighting the necessity of close collaboration with global partners.

Bottom Line

Morphotonics’ successful €40 million funding round marks a pivotal moment for the Dutch innovator, positioning it as a key enabler for the next generation of optical technologies. By leveraging its scalable nanoimprint lithography and tapping into a robust supply chain, the company is set to significantly impact both the burgeoning augmented reality market and the critical infrastructure underpinning AI and high-speed data centers. As demand for advanced optics continues its exponential climb, Morphotonics is well-equipped to transition from a stealthy developer to a vital manufacturing partner, shaping the future of how we see, interact with, and process digital information.
