I Asked ChatGPT 500 Questions. Here Are the Ads I Saw Most Often

OpenAI has begun embedding advertisements into the complimentary edition of ChatGPT. Therefore, this past week, I dedicated my time to posing 500 inquiries to ChatGPT via its mobile application, aiming to discern the presentation of these novel advertisements as they are deployed to a broader user base across the US. My questions were generally derived from OpenAI’s stated usage patterns for individuals accessing its generative AI-driven utility, for instance, when seeking data or requesting practical guidance.

Based on my initial trials, the ChatGPT advertisements seemed quite prevalent. Approximately one in every five prompts within a fresh dialogue sequence elicited an advertisement situated at the base of the chatbot’s response. These ads invariably featured a web address presented as a clickable control and were customized for the overarching subject of my inquiry. While OpenAI persists in its trials with advertisements in ChatGPT, the presentation and the recurrence rate of these ads are subject to modification.

“Given that ChatGPT constitutes a dependable and intimate setting for numerous individuals, we are deliberately introducing advertisements gradually,” an OpenAI representative informed WIRED. “We are commencing with a restricted pool of advertisers and display types, as we refine our approach guided by insights gained.” OpenAI asserts that the choice to deploy advertisements at this juncture bears no relation to any anticipated initial public offering scheduled for later in the current year, but instead forms a component of a sustained plan to maintain ChatGPT’s wide availability.

The ChatGPT advertisements appeared frequently during my initial encounters, yet the breadth of subjects addressed was comprehensive and consistently customized to my most current query. An advertisement for Uber, bearing the text “Your Schedule, Your Earnings,” appeared subsequent to my inquiry regarding the gig economy. OpenAI presented an advertisement for Page Six’s Hollywood newsletter beneath the response when I inquired about the most inferior television program of all time. (The AI suggested The Jerry Springer Show and Cop Rock as potential options.) My inquiry comparing Harvard and Stanford prompted an advertisement for the University of Minnesota’s part-time Master of Business Administration program.

In general, I observed promotions for pet sustenance, printing devices, lodging bookings, efficiency applications, cinema passes, meal dispatch applications, stylish neckwear, digital media platforms, business charge cards, residential furnishings, ocean voyages, artificial intelligence programming utilities, independent editorial professionals, dermatological care publications, commercial internet packages, artisanal presents, food markets, and tickets for basketball games, among various other categories.

Inquiries concerning travel currently appear to elicit advertisements with the highest frequency. Upon soliciting assistance for organizing a journey to Palm Springs, the advertisement appended to the base of the response promoted Booking.com. Subsequent to my activation of the hyperlink, the system autonomously sought out lodging promotions in Palm Springs.

Prior to the current year’s adoption of advertisements for complimentary users, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer, had vocalized his aversion to chatbots featuring advertisements. “I detest advertisements,” Altman remarked during a public forum at Harvard Business School in 2024. He articulated that the combination of “advertisements alongside AI is rather distinctively disquieting,” and this provoked inquiries regarding potential influences on a chatbot’s responses.

“I somewhat perceive advertisements as a final alternative for our business framework,” he stated. “I would implement it if it signified the sole method to provide universal access to superior services globally. However, should we discover an alternative approach, I would favor that instead.” It appears 2026 signifies a period for certain final-option undertakings. OpenAI recently ceased operation of Sora, its social networking application dedicated to AI-generated videos, and abandoned blueprints for a risqué iteration of ChatGPT. Executives within the corporation are endeavoring to rationalize procedures and deter rival entities through an amplified concentration on fundamental offerings.

OpenAI commenced trials of advertisements within ChatGPT during February within the United States. My initial observation of these occurred within my trial account in early March. The corporation asserts that advertisements do not affect the substance of ChatGPT’s responses, and that your entire dialogue remains unshared with entities funding ad placements. The advertisements delivered to users are shaped by the subject of your inquiry, in addition to your prior conversations and any data ChatGPT retains in its internal storage concerning you.
