Oppo’s New Foldable: The Crease Almost Vanishes

Oppo’s new foldable isn’t quite creaseless, but it’s pretty damn close

Typically, the initial action taken by many individuals upon evaluating a folding handset I am assessing is to seek the fold mark on the display. However, with Oppo’s Find N6, locating it could prove time-consuming for them.Related: Galatasaray’s Shock…

Oppo asserts that the Find N6, set for its complete debut next week, on March 17th, features the globe’s inaugural “imperceptible fold” flexible screen. To clarify upfront: the term “zero” is somewhat an overstatement.Related: Europa League Face-Off: Y…

The fold on this device is discernible, though merely faintly, and solely when deliberate attention is paid. It is also visible, yet only under specific lighting conditions and from a precise viewpoint, requiring a slight narrowing of the eyes to perceive it. This represents the most inconspicuous fold I have encountered on any collapsible device to date; its subtlety makes it genuinely difficult to conceive how it might cause annoyance to any user.

Oppo’s primary method for attaining this more understated fold is, in fact, quite innovative: 3D fluid deposition. The firm states that the fold primarily stems from discrepancies in the height of the underlying hinge’s surface, consequently, it addressed the issue by endeavoring to eliminate these disparities. A laser scans the hinge to pinpoint areas of surface irregularity; subsequently, a photopolymer is deposited to occupy these voids and solidified by an intense burst of ultraviolet radiation. Oppo indicates this procedure is reiterated over 20 times, culminating in typical surface deviations of merely 0.05mm – a dimension finer than a human strand of hair.

Moreover, Oppo asserts that the Find N6’s fold ought to remain challenging to discern across the device’s lifespan, instead of deteriorating progressively. For this purpose, a somewhat thicker variety of pliable glass is employed, possessing greater resilience against distortion and enhanced shape recovery capabilities. Clearly, evaluating this after only a few days with the handset presents a challenge; however, the corporation presented a device purportedly folded 200,000 times, and its fold sensation was indistinguishable from my brand-new review model.

As the phone’s complete unveiling is still a week away, Oppo remains discreet regarding the majority of the Find N6’s additional specifications. The firm has merely affirmed the inclusion of at least one 200-megapixel photographic sensor; digital pen compatibility; along with IP56, IP58, and IP59 certifications for defense against particulate matter and liquids — indicating it does not quite reach the Honor Magic V6’s IP69 standard or the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s IP68. It is also slender, comparable in dimensions to the svelte Find N5 from the previous year and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Furthermore, it will be offered in the metallic hue of my evaluation model, alongside an anticipated iPhone-esque orange variant.

Further particulars will be revealed on March 17th, the date on which the company asserts the Find N6 will receive a “worldwide” introduction — however, given that last year’s Find N5 was solely released in China and a limited number of Asian territories, the true extent of its global availability remains uncertain.
