TerraPower, a nuclear energy startup established by Bill Gates, has secured authorization from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to construct an advanced reactor in Wyoming. This facility marks the inaugural full-scale commercial, sophisticated nuclear power plant to ever obtain such a federal permit, according to the official announcement. Furthermore, it will be the initial commercial reactor built in the United States in nearly a decade.

The erection of the Wyoming facility is anticipated to conclude before 2030. TerraPower stands among numerous firms striving to develop more compact and effective reactors aimed at bolstering power networks, which are experiencing pressure due to AI data centers. During a 2024 discussion with The Verge, Bill Gates also expressed his conviction that atomic power can contribute to resolving the global warming emergency by employing blueprints that lessen the problem “regarding their security, fuel consumption, or waste management practices.”

In contrast to traditional water-cooled nuclear facilities, TerraPower’s “Natrium” design, rated at 345 megawatts, employs fluid sodium to cut down on containment costs and function at diminished pressures. The TerraPower facility additionally boasts an distinctive “molten salt-based energy storage system,” which enables it to readily increase its electricity generation to 500 megawatts during periods of peak demand.
