Should you utilize an Uber or Lyft service departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), your fare might soon incur higher expenses.
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners endorsed a hike in rideshare levies, elevating the fee from $4 to potentially $12 per journey — an action Uber is cautioning will affect both passengers and operators, FOX 11 stated.
According to the new arrangement, rideshare transportation will incur a fundamental $6 charge to access LAX. A supplementary $6 levy will be imposed for embarkations or disembarkations within the airport’s Central Terminal Area, FOX 11 indicated.

Currently, rideshare providers remit approximately $4 per embarkation or disembarkation. Cab companies pay $4 for pickups, whereas limousine services pay $5. Taxis and limos are exempted from fees for drop-offs, as reported by FOX 11.
Airport authorities state that the elevated charges aim to alleviate traffic gridlock and motivate passengers to utilize the airport’s new SkyLink automated people mover once it becomes operational, as per ABC7 Los Angeles.
“Being permitted to disembark there will result in a $2 additional charge for the ride-share companies,” Vanessa Rodriguez, deputy executive director of external affairs at Los Angeles World Airports, explained to ABC7 Los Angeles. She added, “As the primary gateway to the airport, fundamentally, an individual will be able to board the SkyLink train and complete the entire circuit of the horseshoe in 10 minutes.”

Nonetheless, Uber states the charge will be directly transferred to all consumers and would amount to approximately three times the $4.24 prevailing rate observed across principal U.S. airports.
“The board’s resolution substantially elevates the expense of traveling to and from LAX,” Danielle Lam, head of local California policy at Uber, stated to FOX Business via email. She added, “A 140% levy increase will directly affect passengers and diminish patronage for operators who depend on airport journeys.”
Elevated passenger fares typically curb patronage for airport journeys, thereby constraining operators’ income prospects. Uber suggests that the proposed LAX fee hike might lead to roughly $1,000 in forgone revenue per driver every three months.
