OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed on Friday that his company finalized an agreement with the Department of War to implement its artificial intelligence models on its classified network, merely hours subsequent to President Donald Trump instructing federal agencies to discontinue using competitor Anthropic.

Altman stated via a message on X that he had been engaged in discussions with the Pentagon, which “demonstrated profound regard for security and a keenness to collaborate for the optimal result.”

“Artificial intelligence security and broad dissemination of advantages are the heart of our objective,” he said. “A pair of our paramount security tenets are bans on widespread internal monitoring and human accountability for employing might, encompassing self-governing weaponry. The DoW assents to these principles, incorporates them into legislation and strategy, and we integrated them into our accord.”

This arrangement followed Trump’s directive to all government departments to cease employing Anthropic’s innovations, intensifying a confrontation regarding the appropriate application of AI in defense activities.

Through a Truth Social message, Trump stated that departments, the Department of War among them, would be granted a six-month divestment timeframe.

“Anthropic must rectify its conduct, and assist cooperatively throughout this transition phase, or I will employ the complete authority of the Presidency to enforce their adherence, with significant civilian and penal repercussions ensuing,” he wrote.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth subsequently stated he was instructing the department to label Anthropic as a “vulnerability in the supply chain to national defense.”

“With immediate effect, no vendor, provider, or associate engaging in commerce with the United States military is permitted to undertake any business dealings with Anthropic,” he added. “Anthropic will persist in rendering its offerings to the Department of War for a maximum duration of half a year to allow for an unhindered shift to a superior and more loyal provider.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had declined previous requests from the Department of War for its AI to be utilized for “every legitimate application,” referencing apprehensions regarding “widespread internal monitoring” and “completely self-governing armaments.”

Anthropic informed Fox News Digital on Friday that Hegseth’s categorization of the firm as a vulnerability in the supply chain “succeeds months of deliberations that arrived at a deadlock concerning a pair of exemptions we sought to the permissible application of our AI system, Claude: the extensive internal oversight of U.S. citizens and entirely self-operating weaponry.”

“We have not, as of yet, acquired direct correspondence from the Department of War or the White House regarding the progress of our discussions,” the company said.

Anthropic further stated it “endeavored sincerely to forge a consensus with the Department of War,” backing all legitimate national defense applications of AI apart from the two sought exemptions, which, it claimed, “have not impacted any governmental operation thus far.”

The company also termed the supply chain vulnerability classification an “hitherto unseen measure — an action customarily set aside for U.S. opponents, never previously openly imposed upon a U.S. enterprise.”

Altman stated OpenAI would implement supplementary protective measures to guarantee its systems “function appropriately,” and that the firm would exclusively utilize cloud-based infrastructures.

“We are urging the Department of War to extend these identical conditions to every artificial intelligence enterprise, which, in our judgment, we believe all ought to be prepared to embrace,” Altman proceeded. “We have communicated our fervent wish for matters to subside, moving away from judicial and administrative interventions and progressing toward sensible accords.”

Brie Stimson of FOX Business provided input for this dispatch.
