Tesla is set to bypass a one-month halt of its dealership and manufacturing authorizations within California, having conformed to a state directive to cease employing the phrase “autopilot” in the promotion of its automobiles, state regulatory bodies confirmed on Tuesday.
This verdict resulted from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) determining in December 2025 that Tesla infringed upon state legislation through deceptive promotion of its electric automobiles, utilizing the designations “autopilot” and “full self-driving.”
The oversight body declared on Tuesday that Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer implemented “corrective steps” and ceased employing the phrase “autopilot,” further remarking that Tesla had previously adjusted its application of “full self-driving” through specifying the necessity of operator monitoring.

Steve Gordon, Director of the California DMV, declared in an official announcement that “The Department of Motor Vehicles prioritizes security across every thoroughfare and populace of California.” He added, “The agency is gratified that Tesla undertook the mandated steps to preserve its conformity with the consumer safeguards of the State of California.”
As per the DMV, promotional content for Tesla’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) from 2021 onwards employed the phrases “autopilot” and “full self-driving capability,” accompanied by the declaration, “This system is engineered to facilitate journeys of both brief and extended lengths without intervention from the occupant in the driver’s position.”
Nonetheless, the DMV asserted that the automobiles “were unable, at the point of those promotions, and remain unable currently, to function as self-governing conveyances.”
The DMV lodged charges concerning Tesla’s production and sales permits during November of 2023; subsequently, the car manufacturer Tesla ceased employing the expression “full self-driving capability” upon observing that the mechanism necessitated human oversight.

During the preceding year, the California Office of Administrative Hearings conducted a proceeding in front of an administrative jurist, who put forth a provisional ruling in November, concluding that the phrase “autopilot” infringed upon state legislation.
The DMV had allotted Tesla a period of sixty days to implement remedial measures. Through adherence, Tesla circumvented a provisional halt within California — which stands as its primary market in the U.S.
As stated on its online portal, Tesla’s “autopilot” functionality enables automobiles to correspond with the pace of vehicular flow and aids in guidance inside a designated track.
