Babcock, in collaboration with Tech South West, has inaugurated a National Marine Autonomy Accelerator, an initiative designed to bolster rapidly expanding enterprises pioneering self-governing maritime technologies and associated innovations, the corporation announced.
Serving as an expert collaborator in this venture, the University of Plymouth’s involvement signifies the inaugural industry-focused group under Tech South West’s Growth Forge undertaking. From its inception in 2024, Growth Forge has assisted over 110 businesses spanning diverse industries. This marine autonomy group’s formation is a consequence of Plymouth’s recent naming as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy, which further underscores the increasing prominence of the South West in cutting-edge maritime innovations.
Andrew Munday, Babcock’s Global Technology Director, stated this undertaking constitutes a component of the corporation’s broader interaction with petite enterprises in the domain. “Our collaboration with Tech South West reinforces our dedication to aid and eventually assimilate the most innovative small and medium-sized enterprises into the broader proficiencies we provide to our clientele.”
He further commented: “Leveraging our capital infusion and enduring foothold in the region, we are improving current marine autonomy initiatives, fostering financial expansion, and fortifying the robustness of our regional populations. Working jointly on future-forward marine autonomy signifies our direct channeling of funds into development within the UK and our commitment to forging a more protected, less perilous globe for all.”
This accelerator leverages Babcock’s established rapport with the University of Plymouth and their mutual participation in Team Plymouth, a joint undertaking formed after the United Kingdom’s Defense Expansion Agreement. This endeavor aims to reinforce connections among the military sector, academia, and commerce in the domain of maritime self-governance.
Dan Pritchard, Joint-Founder of Tech South West, remarked: “Amalgamating Babcock’s military acumen and the University of Plymouth’s scholarly proficiencies forges something truly distinctive for entrepreneurs. Operating within a dedicated collective and in direct conjunction with a principal military corporation will yield tangible advantages for everyone involved. Expediting novelty, military acquisition, governing structures, and gaining entry to evaluation venues, we’ll be offering a spectrum of bespoke chances.”
Professor Kevin Jones, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Plymouth, stated: “As an institution, we possess an extensive history of employing our specialized knowledge to cultivate novelty, and progress in maritime self-governance and versatile technologies are revealing prospects regionally and throughout the nation.”
He proceeded: “We are devoted to collaborating with our partners across Team Plymouth and the National Centre for Marine Autonomy, to aid enterprises irrespective of their scale in expanding and capitalizing on the potential now presenting itself.”
This venture welcomes firms throughout the United Kingdom, encompassing enterprises currently engaged in the maritime domain and those aspiring to join it.
