The Ministry of Defence has unveiled initiatives presently being implemented to elevate the standard, upkeep, and accessibility of Service Family Accommodation throughout Scotland. These efforts encompass improvements already finalized in Helensburgh, with additional projects slated for completion by 2026.
Responding to a parliamentary inquiry submitted in writing by Labour MP Euan Stainbank, Defence Minister Luke Pollard affirmed that “Our comprehensive Defence Housing Strategy delineates our aspirations for service personnel housing throughout the United Kingdom, encompassing its constituent Devolved Nations.”
Pollard elaborated that the aforementioned strategy would be actualized via the Defence Housing Service, which he characterized as receiving substantial financial backing. He declared: “The Defence Housing Service will actualize the proposals of our nascent Defence Housing Strategy, which is bolstered by £9 billion in investment designated to construct, renovate, and mend 9 out of 10 defence family residences.”
He further added that the program receives support through “our pivotal accord that brought 36,000 properties under public ownership.”
Pollard indicated that enhancement efforts are already in progress, stating: “We successfully renovated 1,000 of the most dilapidated residences ahead of schedule, completing them by Christmas, with hundreds more military properties slated for upgrading by Spring 2026.” He highlighted that “over 50 of these dwellings were located in Scotland.”
The minister also emphasized plans focused on refining long-term projections and diminishing the quantity of vacant properties, asserting: “A novel model for forecasting demand and supply will guarantee that the forthcoming requirements of the Armed Forces are more precisely anticipated, thereby enabling us to provide accommodation in appropriate locations to support military deployments and reduce the incidence of unoccupied homes.”
Pollard additionally mentioned a recent official visit to Scotland, remarking: “The Defence Secretary, John Healey MP, journeyed to Helensburgh in January 2026 to acknowledge the forthcoming impact of the new Armed Forces Bill on Scottish personnel and their kin, including those stationed in Kinloss and Victoria Barracks.”
He recounted that during this visit, Healey observed both completed endeavors and ongoing enhancements, appending: “While in Scotland, he personally witnessed the swift amelioration projects finished for over 50 military families in Helensburgh by Christmas last year, alongside ongoing work for an additional 170 residences set to conclude this year.”
Pollard concluded by affirming that the MOD persistently advocates for superior outcomes from the contractors tasked with maintaining Service Family Accommodation, stating: “We persist in striving for both augmented performance and enhanced fiscal efficiency from the Accommodation Industry Partners who bear responsibility for the upkeep of Service Family Accommodation.”
He appended that oversight is sustained through periodic performance assessments, clarifying: “Performance undergoes monthly scrutiny, including executive-level supervision and via a sequence of regular evaluations, encompassing external audits.”
