The Scottish Government has declared that over 280 metric tons of pre-owned fishing nets from Scotland are destined for Ukraine, where they will aid in repelling Russian drone attacks.

These nets, once kept for reprocessing, are undergoing transformation in response to an explicit plea from the Ukrainian government. The Scottish administration indicates that 228 disused salmon aquaculture nets, with an approximate mass of 280 metric tons, are slated for transport to Ukraine. There, they will be deployed as elevated anti-drone barriers, safeguarding thoroughfares and essential facilities within the nation’s eastern region.

Their purpose is to ensnare unmanned aerial vehicle rotors, thereby impeding their arrival at designated points.

Angus Robertson, the Cabinet Secretary for External Affairs, stated: “As we draw close to the four-year commemoration of Russia’s unlawful incursion into Ukraine, the Scottish Government remains dedicated to assisting Ukraine’s self-protection, and this contribution illustrates that our backing remains steadfast.”

He further mentioned: “The Ukrainian Minister of Community Development issued an explicit appeal for Scotland to furnish previously utilized fishing nets, to be modified for the provision of counter-drone barriers along public thoroughfares across Eastern Ukraine.”

Robertson remarked: “We located 228 disused salmon cultivation nets, totaling 280 metric tons in weight, held in a warehouse awaiting decommissioning. Their function is to ensnare the UAV rotors, preventing them from attaining their objective.” He proceeded to say: “Aerial drone assaults happen almost daily. They have been culpable for numerous fatalities and injuries as well as inflicting extensive destruction across Ukraine. This initiative will aid in thwarting a portion of these lethal assaults.”

The International Trade and Investment Directorate has earmarked £216,000 to cover the expenses of conveying the nets to Ukraine. Denmark, Sweden, and France have likewise contributed fishing nets for comparable counter-drone applications. Officials from the Scottish administration are completing preparations for the consignment’s movement in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence.
