INDIANAPOLIS — On Monday, during their final contest alongside one another, Dan Hurley rested a hand upon Alex Karaban’s shoulder as the veteran player dabbed moisture from his gaze, a moment occurring after Michigan secured a 69-63 triumph against UConn in the ultimate title contest.
Hurley conveyed that he continues to contend with his feelings, his squad having failed to achieve the distinction of becoming the inaugural team since John Wooden’s UCLA streak in the 1960s and 1970s to capture three league championships within a span of four years.
“Simply considering what this collective managed to surmount across the season, their development, and their performance in March – indeed, the entire journey this squad has provided to its mentors and supporters, competing until the end – to be among the final two contenders,” Hurley expressed post-match. “Many assert, ‘You’re more fortunate to be defeated in the initial match of the Final Four than to lose in the title game.’ That is the most utter nonsense. It’s a complete falsehood. Truly. It’s like, this is precisely where you aspired to be. It hasn’t become apparent yet. On tomorrow’s journey, it will, during the return bus trip.
“In due course, it will become clear that you were near to achieving what would have represented a monumental tertiary championship. However, this team simply offered us so much this season. They just failed to convert sufficient attempts.”
Michigan had achieved an unprecedented feat, establishing itself as the initial Division I team to tally 90 or more points in each NCAA tournament game prior to the ultimate title game. Subsequent to their triumph by 18 points against Arizona in the Final Four on Saturday, the Wolverines were considered a formidable contender facing the Huskies on Monday night.
Hurley’s contingent succeeded in dictating a slower pace against a Michigan team that favors a fast-paced offense. During the initial period, the Wolverines failed to register a solitary basket either on a fast break or following a possession loss. Elliot Cadeau, recognized as the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, encountered issues with fouls prior to the intermission, while ankle and knee injuries hampered Yaxel Lendeborg, who converted only one out of five attempts in that same half. Collectively, Michigan converted 38 percent of its shots from the field in the contest, yet UConn only made 31 percent of its attempts.
Trailing by four scores at halftime, the Huskies tallied 19 offensive rebound points during the game. They furthermore concluded the match converting four out of eighteen attempts from beyond the arc post-intermission.
“It’s difficult to experience such a degree of chagrin where, truly, it was simply a matter of us failing to sink sufficient baskets,” Hurley stated. “To manage to limit that opponent to below 40 percent in shooting, 38 percent specifically. This team has overwhelmed every opponent they’ve encountered in this competition. Moreover, your team provides you with 22 second-chance opportunities. Such was the intensity with which we played.”
Karaban will conclude his tenure as the most victorious athlete in the program’s annals, boasting 126 triumphs and two collegiate titles to his credit.
“Indeed, I feel fortunate to have donned this uniform for the maximum possible duration, the utmost playing time, the most matches this season,” Karaban, who tallied a team-high 17 points on Monday, declared. “I primarily returned to secure [a third national title] but didn’t succeed, so it pains me right now. It pains me profoundly at this moment. I’m simply recollecting at present how much I’ve developed since I joined UConn, and I’m finally departing UConn, leaving it in an enhanced standing compared to where I commenced. I dedicated my all. I invested my passion. Now that I am departing, and for UConn to be among the premier programs in collegiate hoops and preeminent, I improved its state from its beginning. I take the greatest pride in that accomplishment.”
Hurley stated that Karaban has been instrumental in the ascent of the team during the preceding period.
“This individual transformed my existence, the lives of the personnel, and the delight he has bestowed upon the institution and its supporters,” Hurley expressed. “His choice to join UConn has positioned us … we are likely the leading institution in collegiate sport currently, having appeared in three out of four ultimate title matchups and secured two of them. He has elevated UConn to that distinguished position in collegiate basketball.”
