Kaiya Wynn, a substitute guard for the Tennessee women’s basketball squad, declared on Tuesday her departure from the program, identifying a perceived affront on senior day the previous weekend as her “tipping point.”
The Lady Vols suffered a defeat in their regular-season conclusion on Sunday against fifth-ranked Vanderbilt, with a score of 87-77, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Wynn appeared in merely nine contests this season, having been absent for the entirety of 2024-25 due to an Achilles tendon ailment. The Tennessee native has dedicated five years to this program.
“This determination was neither trivial nor immediate,” Wynn posted on social media. “For the preceding five years, I committed myself completely to Tennessee and have never once had second thoughts about it. Evidently, my most recent two seasons with the squad proved far from perfect due to numerous factors, yet the occasion I most eagerly anticipated was senior night.
“As an individual who has never commenced a competitive game, I had hoped to be in the starting lineup for my final showing in Thompson-Boling. Plainly, that did not come to pass, and being requested to enter the contest with merely 15 seconds remaining while trailing was not the manner in which I envisioned concluding my time in my arena after five years. While that was not the exclusive justification, it served as the ultimate catalyst for me. I harbor profound affection and deference for my teammates and this program, and I extend my sincerest wishes for success to all.”
Neither Tennessee nor coach Kim Caldwell has yet issued a statement regarding Wynn’s exit.
The Lady Vols hold the sixth seed in the current week’s SEC championship, held in Greenville, South Carolina. During Thursday’s subsequent round, they are slated to confront the victor of the Alabama-Missouri match-up.
Tennessee (16-12, 8-8) has faced difficulties since the close of January, following an unexpected home defeat by Mississippi State. The team has suffered nine losses in its most recent 11 contests, a sequence that features six consecutive defeats. This period encompassed a 30-point loss at UConn and an unprecedented team-record 43-point loss at South Carolina.
Subsequent to their defeat by the Gamecocks, Caldwell remarked, “We exhibited a significant lack of resilience tonight… when facing unease and adverse circumstances, I observe a squad prone to capitulation, and such behavior is unacceptable in crucial matches.”
