Ryan Garcia aims to seize his initial significant global championship as he contends against the reigning WBC welterweight titleholder, Mario Barrios, this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.
Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) earlier secured the provisional WBC lightweight championship in 2021 with a technical knockout victory over Luke Campbell. He seemed to achieve the most significant triumph of his professional life in April 2024 when he overcame Devin Haney via a split judgment — an encounter where Garcia did not meet the designated weight limit and was thus disqualified from claiming the championship strap — but he subsequently yielded a positive result for a proscribed chemical, and the outcome was subsequently invalidated, declared a no-contest. He then was unsuccessful in his attempt to secure the WBA “regular” welterweight title, suffering a points defeat against Rolando “Rolly” Romero last May.
Now Garcia receives a further opportunity — this time facing Barrios, who is undertaking the fourth safeguarding of his championship strap. Barrios secured the WBC provisional championship by defeating Yordenis Ugas in 2023, successfully retained it versus Fabian Maidana in May 2024, and was upgraded to complete titleholder when Terence Crawford was designated as champion in abeyance by the WBC. Since then, he has participated in successive stalemates during championship defenses versus Abel Ramos in November 2024 and Manny Pacquiao last July.
