Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson has declined to offer any definitive assurances regarding Eddie Howe’s future, stating he holds “no particular view on his ongoing role” before clarifying the club was “not currently considering a modification”.
Hopkinson addressed journalists in a press conference seven days after the local rivalry loss to Sunderland and their resounding Champions League thrashing by Barcelona.
These adversities intensified the scrutiny on Howe, whose team sits twelfth in the Premier League table, notwithstanding a substantial summer expenditure – partly financed by Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool – which led the club to invest over £200m in players such as Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga, and Jacob Ramsey.
When questioned regarding Howe’s situation, Hopkinson remarked: “I possess no definitive position concerning his ongoing role. What I can share is that the derby loss was painful. We consider it with gravity. We harbor no sentiment suggesting ‘it’s merely three points, and we move on’. It has been deeply felt.”
“I dedicated a few hours in a private meal recently with Eddie, and we discussed various matters, with that among them.”
“Eddie remains our head coach. I anticipate a strong performance streak until the conclusion of the current campaign, and discussions about what comes next will occur at the appropriate moment. Presently, our attention is fixed on this season’s contests.”
Our focus is on the remaining seven fixtures – Hopkinson
It was suggested to Hopkinson that he had provided an ambiguous reply on Howe, to which he responded: “I would not characterize it thus. We are not contemplating a modification at this juncture.”
“Such discussions are not taking place. We are still in the midst of the campaign. Our current attention is on the seven forthcoming fixtures, and we are not diverting ourselves with conjecture about our potential actions or inactions during the off-season.”
“Presently, our collective capacity is limited, and we are dedicated to this season and concluding it robustly.”
