The young player retains an opportunity.
England manager Thomas Tuchel does not dismiss the prospect of enlisting Max Dowman for the 2026 global tournament, despite opting against incorporating the Arsenal youth into his 35-person lineup for the upcoming exhibition matches.
Enthusiasm surrounding Dowman soared to fresh levels last week, following his pivotal contribution to Arsenal’s two-goal victory against Everton, a result that propelled the Gunners further in their pursuit of the Premier League championship.
The 16-year-old provided the assist for Arsenal’s initial goal, following an error in judgment by Everton and England’s custodian, Jordan Pickford. He then sealed the win by driving from his half of the pitch and slotting the ball into an unguarded goal, as Pickford had abandoned his post to afford Everton an additional player during a late corner kick.
Dowman has represented England nine times at the Under-19 tier, yet has only participated in seven senior fixtures for Arsenal.
Consequently, Tuchel sought to avoid intensifying the scrutiny on Dowman by including him in the roster for the matches against Uruguay and Japan. He remains receptive, however, to the prospect of the attacker featuring in his World Cup strategies.
“He has drawn significant attention to himself now through this remarkable goal against Everton and the pivotal strike,” Tuchel conveyed during a news briefing.
“I believe he is currently contending, and is clearly a magnificent and exceptional talent; at his age, this is beyond question.
“All those who speak to me regarding Max commend him and offer abundant praise. The current truth, however, is that he vies for playing time. He does not consistently feature in Arsenal’s starting lineup. I consider him to be in an excellent setting. Indeed, I feel he is situated within the optimal environment: a competitive, stable club, where collective effort is paramount. This defines their style of play and their operational method. Therefore, he gains knowledge from the elite within an unparalleled setting.
“Concerning these youthful players, we are, naturally, acquainted with all of them and observe them just as you do. Currently, I believe he is ideally positioned to contend for his spot and his playing duration at Arsenal.
“There is always the possibility of potentially summoning him for the World Cup. The objective with emerging talents is to sustain their impetus and maintain their enthusiasm. They possess a certain degree of intrepidity.
“Thus, there is no immediate necessity to enlist him and thereby intensify the strain and the accompanying commotion. However, all choices remain available to us.”
England reinstates Manchester United duo
Prominent among Tuchel’s team roster disclosure were the reinstatements of Manchester United stalwarts Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo.
Although Maguire boasts 64 international appearances for England, his most recent occurred during a Nations League fixture versus the Republic of Ireland in September 2024. That encounter likewise signified Mainoo’s latest outing in an England jersey.

Elaborating on their comeback, Tuchel stated: “This serves merely to recognize Manchester United’s accomplishments as a collective unit. I believe they’ve maintained an exceptional streak since Michael Carrick assumed leadership, and Harry and Kobbie constitute a significant component of that success.
“Therefore, as I previously mentioned, this is the final training assembly before the US trip, presenting my ultimate opportunity to familiarize myself with fresh talents and gather insights about them.
“Kobbie is among this group; Harry, naturally, is not unfamiliar in an England jersey, yet he is new to my experience within a training camp.
“My aim is to observe them interacting with other footballers, to gauge their presence on the field, to ascertain their capabilities, and to understand them thoroughly, enabling me to render a definitive choice in May.”
