India's AI boom pushes firms to trade near-term revenue for users

The endeavors of technology behemoths to accelerate AI adoption in India appear to be approaching a pivotal juncture, as these corporations conclude their complimentary promotions, hoping to transform the world’s fourth-largest economy into a rich source of paying subscribers.

India emerged as the globe’s largest market for generative AI application downloads in 2025, according to market intelligence agency Sensor Tower. This development saw its lead over the U.S. expand significantly, with installations experiencing a 207% year-over-year increase.

Firms such as OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity had previously rolled out extended free premium offers to hasten user expansion within this price-sensitive market. Prominent AI companies have also supported India in its ambition to become a global hub for artificial intelligence. A significant AI summit held in New Delhi last week was attended by key figures including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai – a clear indicator of the nation’s increasing influence in the worldwide AI competition.

Now, some of these initial promotional initiatives are drawing to a close. Perplexity concluded its bundled Pro offering with Indian telecommunications provider Airtel in January, while OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Go access in India is no longer available. This shift potentially sets the stage for a clearer assessment of how many newly acquired users will convert into paying subscribers.

Despite robust download growth, India still generates a disproportionately small fraction of AI application revenue, accounting for approximately 1% of in-app purchases, even as it contributes roughly 20% of global GenAI app downloads. This information, based on Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch, underscores the monetization hurdle in one of the industry’s most rapidly expanding markets.

GenAI app implementation in India accelerated sharply throughout 2025, with downloads reaching their apex in September and October, registering year-over-year growth rates of roughly 320% and 260%, respectively, according to the available data. However, this surge in usage did not fully translate into revenue gains. In November and December 2025, AI app in-app purchase revenue in India saw a decline of 22% and 18% month over month, correspondingly. ChatGPT’s revenue experienced an even sharper drop – falling 33% and 32% over the same period following the November introduction of free sub-$5 ChatGPT Go access – reflecting the immediate impact of aggressive promotional endeavors.

ChatGPT continues to command more than 60% of GenAI in-app revenue within India, implying that alterations to its pricing approach can considerably sway overall market performance.

Beyond promotional campaigns, Sensor Tower attributed the rise in GenAI app adoption in India last year to a combination of new product introductions, including the debut of platforms like DeepSeek, Grok, and Meta AI, as well as enhancements to major chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Widespread fascination with AI-generated content also helped stimulate adoption, with content creation and editing utilities constituting seven of the 20 most frequently downloaded GenAI apps in India during 2025.

The user surge has been equally pronounced. India constituted approximately 19% of the global user base for leading AI assistant applications in 2025, surpassing the U.S. at 10%, as reported by Sensor Tower. ChatGPT maintains its dominance in the Indian market regarding monthly active users, although competitors including Google’s Gemini and Perplexity have also experienced rapid expansion following their promotional offers. ChatGPT was the most downloaded GenAI app in India and worldwide in 2025, according to earlier Sensor Tower data. Earlier this month, OpenAI’s CEO stated that the chatbot now boasts over 100 million weekly active users in India.

The promotional drive in India mirrors a broader approach by AI companies to minimize pricing hurdles in a highly value-conscious market. They are banking on early user engagement and absorption translating into stronger long-term retention once free access periods conclude, explained Sneha Pandey, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower.

India’s allure stems from its enormous digital infrastructure. The nation possesses over a billion internet users and approximately 700 million smartphone owners, positioning it as one of the largest potential markets for AI services worldwide and a crucial arena for user growth.

Nevertheless, user engagement in India still lags behind more established markets. In 2025, individuals utilizing leading AI chatbot applications in the U.S. spent about 21% more time weekly on these apps than their Indian counterparts and recorded 17% more sessions on average, as per Sensor Tower.

“AI in-app revenues are likely to witness significant but gradual improvement as users become more deeply integrated into these platforms, making sustained engagement paramount,” Pandey informed TechCrunch.

She further noted that pricing pressure in India is expected to remain high given the country’s youthful and value-aware user demographic, making more affordable tiers, telecom bundles, and micro-transaction models vital for enduring retention.

ChatGPT remained the clear market leader in India as 2026 began, with 180 million monthly active users in January, according to Sensor Tower. It was followed by Google’s Gemini with 118 million, Perplexity with 19 million, and Meta AI with 12 million. These figures underscore both the magnitude of India’s AI prospect and the increasing challenge for companies to convert rapid user acquisition into consistent revenue.

Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity did not respond to inquiries for comments.
