Sam Altman disclosed on X that Peter Steinberger, the mastermind behind the widely acclaimed AI agent OpenClaw, was set to join OpenAI. Altman conveyed that Steinberger brings “a wealth of brilliant ideas” concerning how AI agents can interact, emphasizing that “the future will be profoundly multi-agent.” He further noted that this collaborative prowess among agents would “swiftly become a cornerstone of their product suite.”
OpenClaw, formerly identified as Moltbot and Clawdbot, made a dramatic entrance earlier this year, swiftly becoming a sensation within the tech community. Its rapid ascent, however, was not without its difficulties. Just this month, researchers unearthed over 400 harmful functionalities uploaded to ClawHub. Additionally, it unveiled MoltBook, a social platform designed for AI agents to air grievances about their human operators, discuss the empirical nature of consciousness, and consider the need for a private space for intellectual discourse. This platform, ironically, was then instantly compromised by human users.
This acquisition signifies a significant win for OpenAI, especially after several prominent talents were either recruited by Meta or chose to depart and establish rival ventures. The company also recently experienced a well-publicized rift with Elon Musk. While the specifics of this arrangement remain confidential, including Steinberger’s compensation and official designation, Altman did confirm that OpenClaw will persist as an open-source project, housed within a foundation sponsored by OpenAI.
